CLIVE ON LEARNING JULY 24, 2011 Give Cruella a chance Epic have begun their Summer 2011 debate. The motion this year is: “This house believes that as social learning increases, so the requirement for traditional training departments shrinks”. am speaking against the motion. Arguing against social media is like asking for support for Cruella De Vil in her quest to make a nice new coat from those cuddly dalmations. Not that I had any choice. | EFRONT JULY 24, 2011 Michael Allen's new eLearning Books A few months ago I had the honor to talk with Michael Allen , Chairman and CEO of Allen Interactions. Michael told me about two new eLearning books that he was writing at the moment. Recently Michael told me that he just published his two news books. As you can understand I am super excited!!! What I really like about Michael is that he offers free chapters from these books. | ALEARNING JULY 24, 2011 Welcome to the Learning Decade! So says Sam Herring, writing for Fast Company in his article, “Moving Toward 2010: The Learning Decade (3/21/11). Bravo! I’m all for that. Of course, I wouldn’t limit the value of learning to just one decade, but if we must, this one is as good as any. Better, says Herring. All because of the Great Recession. “…[M]ore and more organizations recognize that learning can help solve the most vexing economic and financial problems of the day. As a result, we predict that the years leading up to 2020 will be known as ‘The Learning Decade.’. ’. | LEARNING TECHNOLOGY LEARNING JULY 24, 2011 Designing and Teaching an Online Course The title of this post was the title of a consultancy one-day session I ran on 22nd July. Once I'd convinced the client that such a course would be good for their trainers as they looked to develop blended and purely online learning, I relaxed thinking that running it would be simply about bringing everything together in my working practices. This is largely what I did but it was harder than I thought. To suggest that you can teach everything there is to know about designing and teaching an online course is ridiculous. What to leave out and what to focus on is the challenge. | | | | | | | | | -
ONEHUNDREDFORTYWORDS | SUNDAY, JULY 24, 2011 Combining Metrics with Emotion A few days ago, I came across this article (HT: Kay Wood ) about game company wooga and how they “combine metrics with emotion to create successful social games such as Monster World. The first half of the article covers how the company uses metrics — not opinions or theories — to progressively improve its games. For example, wooga has dismissed elements like letting the player choose an avatar (also attractive for elearning) because they’ve found no effect on player engagement. Sorry to criticize so often, but I call them like I see them. Other Sharing/Saving Options. MORE >> -
TOPYX SOCIAL LEARNING | SUNDAY, JULY 24, 2011 Google+ vs. Facebook TechnoBombs is the author of this new infographic ( Technobombs.com ) – By now you’ve probably seen all the headlines, scanned through the “how to” guides, and read all the reasons why so many tech journalists and online socialites are clamoring to get into Google +, with some even bidding on eBay for a G+ invite. But you, you’re more cautious about putting yourself out there online. Perhaps you think Google+ is no different from that other time-suck, Facebook. jodi.harrison@interactyx.com. www.interactyx.com. ENSPIRE LEARNING | SUNDAY, JULY 24, 2011 Do Business Simulations Need to Model Reality? Recently, I have had a few lively discussions about how closely leadership and business simulations should model reality to be meaningful learning experiences. For example, to what extent does a simulation on financial acumen need to replicate the dynamics of specific industries? How closely should strategy or marketing simulations model the positions of industry competitors? How accurately should process simulations reflect departmental processes? And sometimes, modeling reality too closely can actually prevent the right type of meaningful discussion. MORE >>
