Interesting. Have you ever thought about maybe curating a playlist of the ‘gems’? It would be a very useful resource for those looking to achieve that elusive intermediate status and I’m sure would enhance the overall conversation in the forums as more people would be on the same track. Just an idea
Spend already too many hours a day answering questions everywhere without any compensation. Just some thanks and also insults. Who would want to curate and have more time to offer for free?
Oh, I’ m very sorry to hear you have received insults and you certainly do offer a lot to the community. I guess I meant that maybe curating a list of the gems would mean you might get fewer simple questions and more which rely on your advanced knowledge.
Oh no, users want a direct answer, most don’t even bother to search. The laziness is growing a lot sine I started answering questions about Captivate 10 years ago. Very little advanced users on the gorums now..
I guess my perspective has been to try learning from those specific questions with their direct answers and then to generalise out from there. That’s why I see a lot of value in the questions section of this forum also- I mean just by asking a question you are doing two things; 1- generating a market place of ideas so that better solutions emerge and 2- and I think almost more importantly, you are diminishing the number of things ‘we don’t know we don’t know’ – what I mean is, sometimes I read questions that had never occurred to me but those questions and their answers have pushed me forward immensely.
I never took any training, nor did I buy a book to learn Captivate. I just screened the forums, and tried quickly to solve problems for other users. Each learner has his personal style….
Yeah, I guess we’re really saying much the same thing.
Best way would be trying & working with Captivate. There are 1000s of small projects submitted by community members… try doing the same and when you stuck take their reference note(might have explanation provided in the same blog) …. and once you are comfortable with intermediate level, read Lieve Weymeis blog, where you will find UNLIMITED information, Tips & Tricks on Captivate usage.
Another comment: what is ‘advanced’? You have your idea about that, and I have mine. Since I offer personalized Captivate training, which I always start with an interview (free) and screening of the skills of the trainee (exploring projects in development) I mostly discover that even basic concepts have not been understood nor mastered. Very strange but that makes a ‘canned’ advanced training (let alone a book) almost impossible to offer. Not everyone lacks the same basic skills, not needs the same advanced training.
Thanks for your response. You’re right. Advanced means something different for everyone. For me, I feel like a lot of tutorials cover the same things. I’d like to be able to customize things a little more via JavaScript for example and there aren’t a lot of details on what the limitations of that would be.
Thanks for the confirmation. I do use JS sparingly, because I know how powerful advanced and shared actions can be and I am…. a control freak. Lately I see a lot of newbies copy/paste JS scripts created by experts without understanding what is happening. Not my way… Explore the inbuilt point-and-click actions, they are converted to JS on runtime. Add the CpExtra widget (by InfoSemantics) to extend to more customisability. I wil use JS for features which are impossible, like arrays, random numbers, formatting of numbers/dates.
Since I do consultancy, explaining the workflow based on an advanced/shared action is much easier than having to explain a script to the client.
Not the answer you are looking for. There are NO books about advanced Captivate training. I have been blogging since 10 years, for the biggest part about advanced techniques. Many users have asked me to write out a book, and I have several half-finished ones. Who would buy such a book, since most Captivate users seem to think that everything can be found for free in videos? That treasure chest (free video channels) has some nice gems, but a lot of crap as well.

%aybe 5 people would buy it…. costs me a lot of money only to publish it as an e-book, even when not counting the working hours.
