6 Alternatives To Bullet Lists

The eLearning Coach

Bullets make lists of important points easy to read. When those near-perfect little circles are vertically aligned, readers can quickly process the text. Yet too many bullet lists in an eLearning course or slide presentation can be repetitious and mind-numbing. Learners and audiences need novelty to maintain and sustain attention. The trick for going beyond bullets is to think visually. GRAPHICS

Cues that You Need an Image Instead of Text

Integrated Learnings

By Shelley A. Gable. We know that meaningful images provide a memorable and efficient way to learn information. Yet, in the tradition of building bulleted lists in PowerPoint, text dominates many eLearning courses. As a text-oriented person myself -- someone who finishes reading an article's text and then goes back to view the tables and charts -- translating text into images does not come naturally for me. So, over the past year, I've made it an informal personal goal to get better at it. Here are a few cues that prompt me to consider replacing text with images. Image Cue: Process Overview.

Trina Rimmer

The following is a real outtake over-heard from an actual training class: "It's important when you speak to customers that you use your own words and feel comfortable in what you are saying. I've prepared some scripts that will help.". In the language of today's 140-character driven society, I'm going to label this one as an #authenticityfail. Authenticity as the Secret Sauce.

The personal web

Learning with e's

With the Southampton PLE Conference #PLE_SOU at full throttle, I thought it would be a good time to reiterate my views on the personal web. Personal Web Tools (PWTs) are thought by some to be synonymous with PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) but the two should not be confused. Sound like a PLE? Almost, but not quite. My view is that PWTs sit inside a PLE but they are not the whole story.

Social Learning & the Hourly Employee

CLO Magazine

In giving talks about social learning, I am often asked various questions about building a case for social learning.  However, in our efforts to justify why a social learning program should be implemented or even why one should be stopped, we often miss the opportunity to have someone speak from the workforce-centric perspective. Specifically, how do we support the needs of a workforce of hourly workers? Many times the issue is raised that managers do not want non-exempt or hourly employees accessing a system when they are “off the clock”.
