THE ELEARNING COACH MAY 6, 2011 10 Tips For Designing mLearning And Support Apps For quite a while now, I’ve been pouring over mobile design books, listening to podcasts and reading online content to learn the best practices for designing mobile phone applications as I design one of my own. Strangely enough, it seems as though many gurus actually agree on the basics of functionality, usability and aesthetics required [.] Post from: The eLearning Coach 10 Tips For Designing mLearning And Support Apps. MOBILE | I CAME, I SAW, I LEARNED MAY 6, 2011 Writing & Grammar: Acronyms--Are they Both Efficient and Clear? by Jennie Ruby I have been told, and have taught, that you define an acronym on first use if it is used at least once more in the document. But during a recent class one of my students opened my eyes to thinking further about acronym use. Writers and editors at her agency, she said, have a policy that if an acronym is not used at least five times in the text, they do not use the acronym at all. That policy struck me at once as being so sensible that I immediately adopted it for my own use. Just spell it out the second time. The people were then called MWUs throughout the text. | CLIVE ON LEARNING MAY 6, 2011 CIPD survey shows the cuts are hurting L&D The CIPD’s Learning and Talent Development Survey for 2011 has recently been released. Some 11,562 UK L&D practitioners were invited to participate, although only 601 did, which rather indicates that people have other things on their mind at the moment – like staying in a job. So what does the survey tell us from an e-learning perspective? Blended learning is not on the list of options by the way. Having said all of the above, some 76% thought that e-learning was effective for training non-managerial employees. Only 9% of respondents report their budgets growing in the past 12 months. | ONLIGNMENT MAY 6, 2011 A contextual model for learning Throughout 2011 we will be publishing extracts from The New Learning Architect. We move on to the first part of chapter 4: Every context is a learning context, whether we are at work or play. We are born as learning machines and continue to learn until the day we die. Four contexts. Non-formal : Non-formal learning is ‘learning to’ with a more relaxed timeframe. Two perspectives. | | | | | | | | | -

GEORGE SIEMENS | FRIDAY, MAY 6, 2011 Massive Open Online Courses: Interview with Howard Rheingold Howard Rheingold is a highly regarded thinker/theorist on the social impact of technology (see his book Smart Mobs ). Recently, he’s been exploring on how social media influences learning – see Social Media Classroom project and he’s working on a new book on this topic (couldn’t find a link, though I’m sure it exists). Howard contacted me for a short interview (that I stretched out to more than double the length intended by saying too many words all in a row) on my experiences with massive open online courses (MOOCs). TAYLORING IT | FRIDAY, MAY 6, 2011 Oh well, at least somebody’s finding my work of use… … pity it’s not my employer! Regular readers will know the ongoing struggle that I am having with my organisation in terms of enabling anything beyond ‘click next’ type elearning, it will probably come as no surprise to many that I have considered letting this blog fizzle out for similar reasons as Karyn Romeis , however I have always been aware that my best chance of securing another job with a more forward thinking organisation lies with being able to demo an up-to-date knowledge of the industry. Do you blog? If so, why? If so what? Share/Bookmark. MORE >> -
