SOCIAL LEARNING BLOG DECEMBER 17, 2012 When is eLearning a Smart Management Decision? I was asked recently to define situations where eLearning is a smart management decision over the same course in an instructor-led training (ILT) format. There There is a tremendous amount of information available about the advantages of eLearning as a delivery method, but there is not a whole lot devoted to this particular question. Situation: Your audience is geographically diverse. | USABLE LEARNING DECEMBER 17, 2012 Why I don’t like WIIFM This is excerpted and expanded from a post that I wrote for the Tin Can blog . We’ve talked about WIIFM (What’s in it for me?) for years – it’s one of those things you always hear that you need to include in learning experiences to persuade your learners to pay attention. Instead, they need to know that the thing they are learning is actually useful and necessary. remen, doctors, etc.), Thoughts? | SOCIAL LEARNING BLOG DECEMBER 17, 2012 When is eLearning a Smart Management Decision? In my 2nd year as a freelance instructional designer, I learned a lot about myself and my industry. While I see great promise in technology and, a good deal of momentum for change in how we foster and measure learning and performance in the workplace, there’s still a lot of work to be done. Between debunked learning theories that resurface with zombie-like persistence (hello learning styles !) Your “performance” objective for a compliance course is that people click an Acknowledgment button. What were yours? | | | | | | | | | -
MOODLE JOURNAL | MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2012 eBook Student Survey I guess it when it comes to planning and delivering a course using a technology platform such as Moodle, it does become part of normal practice to introduce new resources simply by supplying a suitable link and this year one of these links was to eBooks. So I was more than an little fascinated by report from edudemic.com '10 Surprising Facts About Students Using E-Textbooks’ From a survey by eCampus.com. When asked however why they chose eBooks almost half, 48% cited cost, not any kind of techno leverage, a little surprising I felt. What do you think, please feel free to comment. MORE >> -

GEORGE SIEMENS | MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2012 Connections: Deconstruction and Connectivism I haven’t really spent much time with modern French philosophers. They vex me and use many words to say few, but ambiguous, things. However, I’ll spend time revisiting Derrida and others (notably Latour, but he is a sociologist, so I have more tolerance), especially after a student in the MDDE622 course that Rory McGreal and I taught at Athabasca University, posted an interesting learning module on Deconstruction and Connectivism. Stella Bastone agreed to share the module. great resource MORE >> -
SIMPLIFY ELEARNING | MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2012 Lincoln, the Storyteller Synthesis: What makes a good storyteller? Stories abound and Lincoln – the extremely smart being that he is – used these accounts to bring home critical points for decision making and persuasion. Embedding stories in the learning design achieves a similar outcome. Discover how Lincoln inspires you and me to become better storytellers, too. __ Click here for a preview of "Lincoln" I saw the movie “Lincoln” three times. Totally inspiring and deeply moving. This would have compromised the plan to pass the emancipation act. Can we choose to be born? Are we fitted to the times we’re born into? MORE >> -
TOPYX SOCIAL LEARNING | MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2012 Associations and Non-profits Need a Helping Hand Associations and non-profits have faced enormous challenges over the past few years.
