This blog post is part of our “Cup of Joe” series in which we publish Joe’s answers to common eLearning standards questions to go along with your morning coffee. If you have a question, you can always fill out this form and ask Joe too.

Hey Joe,

I have plenty of experience building great courses, but I struggle to make sure my content is ready to share with learners. I want to make ensure that I’m creating, packaging it and delivering content successfully. What kinds of things should I keep in mind?

Thanks,
Lost in the course

Hi Lost in the course,

Part of choosing the right learning standard is knowing what kind of data you’d like to collect. If you are trying to collect basic information like completion, score, time and satisfaction, SCORM might be the standard you need. If you are looking for something a little more robust, you may find xAPI or cmi5 to be more helpful. To have a better understanding of each of the standard’s key features, take a look at our comparison chart

Another thing to consider is the way you plan to share your content. Are you planning to share through a specific LMS? If so, think about what standards that LMS supports. If you don’t have an LMS, you’ll need a reliable way to play and track your content. Our content distribution ebook covers this well.

Once you know how you are going to deliver content, you may want to consider one of our products, like a free SCORM Cloud account or Content Controller. Our software allows you to share content to any LMS, with additional features like version control, so learners always have access to the most up-to-date content.

Also, please join Andy Whitaker and I for our free, upcoming webinar on November 10th, where we will be covering how to navigate a proven path from content creation to distribution. There, we can talk to you about your specific needs and learner journey.

I hope these suggestions will help you think about the standard that is best for your goals and learners. If you’d like more guidance on optimizing your content for distribution, feel free to shoot us a message at support@rusticisoftware.com. We are happy to help where we can!

Thank you,
Joe
