Social networking so far

Moodle Journal

I have some satisfaction and surprises reviewing the way in which my plans for introducing a social networking forum are working out with the courses this year. I have given the rounded figures in the table. A couple of points come to mind for me: 1 by far the most active group is the BTEC National General, but this is a year 2 group, so they already know each other well by now. 2 Though the HND group seem to have shown more activity than the BTEC National Software, in fact less then half, 9/23,

Making certificates count

Clive on Learning

Elliott Masie has been getting quite aeriated recently about overblown certifications - see Tougher certifications please. He writes: "I am quite concerned about assessments and certifications that are too easy! We have been tracking the rise of certifications that are really just 'Certificates of Sitting'. And, some corporate assessments are starting to feel like "Everyone Gets a Trophy" exercises.

Rapid eLearning - More Definition

Tony Karrer

I had previously posted about What is Rapid eLearning? I just recently saw a Briefing from Kineo on roughly the same topic and it really confirmed what was in my earlier post. In my earlier post, I talked about the drivers for Rapid eLearning, so I'll skip that in this post. Kineo's definition of rapid eLearning was based on the following seven attributes: Can be developed in 21 days or less Doesn't require specialist knowledge and skills or 3rd party support Can use SMEs to author directly Requ

Podcasting

Moodle Journal

Last week I decided to start using a podcast approach as part of my regular Moodle material. I have incorporated these as part of my level 4 groups work in Object Oriented Design. The course is delivered as a series of lectures accompanied by detailed course notes and assessed using a portfolio approach of exercises. It’s the presentation in class of these exercises that I have decided to make available as mp3’s.

Give Gagne a chance

Clive on Learning

Donald Clark's posting Gagne's Nine Dull Commandments was, true to form, amusing and designed to rock the boat. He pokes fun at the instructional design gurus whose pronouncements have been so slavishly followed for decades and which are so rarely evaluated for their real contribution and current relevance. As Donald suggests, Gagne's commandments do seem rather restrictive and old-fashioned.

Recently I've had the circumstances to discuss the role of a CLO in a couple different environment. Is Gagne Relevant for eLearning Courseware Design?

There's an interesting discussion sparked by Donald Clark's - Gagne's Nine Dull Commandments. I started three new level 3 groups today and as a first exercise decided they should begin to make use of Moodle by posting lifestyle styles and ambitions to a forum. Postings could include links, particularly if they had Myspace, some did. I then asked them to reply to at least 2 postings, but not if they were already friends; I encourage this in support of the need to establish a virtual presence, after all given the diminishing requirement of funding bodies, students are only actually at Coll

Virtual Corporate University : Thomson Netg

The New Media Center held an inworld tour of the ThomsonNetg campus this morning. I now remember why I've been a big advocate of interactive 3D learning for 10+ years. Why you should ply your subject experts with drinks

Clive on Learning

Donald Clark has set the cat amongst the pigoen again with his posting about subject matter experts (or egomaniacs as he calls them). I have to say I'm on his side with this one. It's not often that SMEs contribute anything that a learner would want to learn from, although I'm not sure learning designers always ask the right questions (which may be why learning designers don't always produce anything anyone would want to learn from either).

Roles in Educational Simulations and Role-Plays

The Learning Circuits

Quick question. How might you describe the different "people" in this room: Real people and avatars? Coaches, students, and characters? Teammates and competitors? Buddies? Colleagues? Leader and followers? A challenge in discussing educational simulations is that the same person has different roles, depending on if you are looking at the context of the virtual world, the classroom, and the real world.

Adoption of Web 2.0 and eLearning 2.0 Revisited

Tony Karrer

A consistent pattern in our response to new technologies is we simultaneously overestimate the short-term impact and underestimate the long-term impact. - Roy Amara of the Institute for the Future. I have (and I believe that it's common) a natural tendency when looking at new technologies to swing back-and-forth between believing they are the best thing since sliced bread, trying something with the tool, running into barriers to adoption, feeling like they'll never get adopted.

Mathcasts by kids.do you really need a Masters in EdTech?

Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development

Jon Udell has a great interview with Tim Fahlberg today. Tim is changing the face of math education at Coolschooltools.com and Mathcasts.org. This is a must listen. What strikes me is that KIDS are creating these mathcasts which makes their learning deeper and also helps those who come after them. Corporate training departments all over the world are paying giant sums of money to create powerpoint and then even more money on tools that convert those to "online learning".
