Do You WANT an LMS? Does a Learner WANT an LMS?

Tony Karrer

I should be working on content for my presentations at DevLearn in October that look at what's next in eLearning. (As a side note: if you are going to DevLearn and are reading this, please drop me a note.) However, the "what's next" question has become more challenging recently as we've seen the rapid growth of simple and easy to deploy tools displacing more complex systems.

Interactive White Boards for Free

Moodle Journal

I discovered a really promising web based application the other day that was promoted as an interactive whiteboard, not surprisingly it’s called Virtual White Board. I registered for an account and though you do not at this stage get all the fancy clipart and sound clips etc; its still in beta, I was impressed with the functionality. Here at college interactive white-boards, probably due to the cost just do not seem to have happened, though all our computing rooms do all have a master PC and pro

Do You Trust Me?

The Learning Circuits

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a transglobal teleconference on the Future of Media here in San Francisco along with a link to a concurrent session in Sydney, Australia. Despite some audio/visual problems with the link between the two sites, the content of the sessions was thought provoking and painstakingly honest. To hear leaders in the field admit to not really knowing what's going to happen is both refreshing and a bit scary.

A suggested chatiquette

Clive on Learning

Text chat would not be many learners' medium of choice for synchronous communication with their group during a course. The order of preference probably goes: Face-to-face communication. Web conferencing that includes a visual dimension (webcams / graphics, etc.) and an audio dimension (VOIP or acccompanying teleconference). Teleconferencing or instant messaging with VOIP.

Where are open source learning applications?

Tony Karrer

Good post by Harold Jarche - Where are open source learning applications? In it he points to the learning space and says that the current status of open-source learning applications is: Innovators - Elgg Learning Landscape and several others Early Adopters - Moodle and a few others Early Majority - nobody Late Majority - forget about it I would tend to agree with him that there are relatively few open-source learning applications, but would add a few thoughts.

In the last few weeks I have been taking a close look at elgg and trying to decide whether to promote it as part of my courses in the coming year. I set-up my account and began trawling through the various options and facilities, and came to the conclusion that it will be ideal for creating a personalised learning space. While on this subject, there is a whole debate going on it seems around personalised learning at the moment, so if you are interested in getting clarification you may like to br

Nuvvo: a good idea that needs good content

Clive on Learning

In hindsight I approached the e-learning site Nuvvo with unrealistic optimism. I was keen because Nuvvo has a modern, Web 2.0 feel and ethos. Its aim - to provide a way for those who wish to teach online to reach those who want to learn online - seems attractive, even laudable. If you're an expert on something, use Nuvvo to put together a course incorporating simple online materials and collaboration; offer this free or charge for it if you wish/can/dare.

Major CMS Vendor Adds LMS/SCORM Capabilities

Tony Karrer

Relevant to the recent discussions around Do You WANT an LMS? Does a Learner WANT an LMS? and the possibility that we could soon be seeing something that looks more like a Wiki+Tracking capability, I just saw the news: Vignette Provides Online, On-Demand Training For Customers. They've added tracking and SCORM to their CMS solution. So, maybe my previous comments about this being a couple years away may have been too conservative.

Following my request for the web-cast to be set-up, a first for Bromley College I must say, it was reassuring to have evidence of it actually being used, and given the technical iss

We're #3! We're #3!

Recently I spent a little time pondering a statement that I've ascribed to for sometime now: In a ranking of all of the groups in a typical organization who have the responsibility for helping direct the learning of employees or customers, corporate training would finish 3rd - at best. What? 3rd!?!? No Way! WAY. It's my belief that an honest appraisal of any good size organization will likely show that two departments would prove to be more efficient and effective in helping their target a
