The post: eLearning Technology: Online Programs that Offer Training in eLearning? has provided some interesting results around online programs - and a really interesting question: How do employers view online degree programs? If you are going to spend the money and time upgrading your skills, you want to make sure the employer will recognize them. I am very curious what other people think about this.

In the 1980s, several theories of learning that concentrated on studying learning as an internal function of the brain and as a social process.as opposed to overt actions and stimulas-response began to gain popularity and momentum. These theories and the study of how computers processed information all converged and led to the creation of a learning philosophy known as Cognitivism.

I am hopeful that Moodle here at bromley College will begin to fulfil a commercial role following an enquiry the other day from company who required a course in Website Design for one of their employees. I have been running a very successful self financing course “HTML and JavaScript for Website Designers” for some time now, however it does require a minimum of 12 students to be viable, with the next one likely to start in January.

Photo by Pin Add from Flickr I gave a paper at the EDEN conference in Vienna in June this year, and afterwards I was approached by a Swedish delegate. We talked briefly (as you do) about my research and I casually remarked that Sweden was the only Nordic country I had never visited. Pleasant chap. Nice conversation. I thought no more of it. When I got back to my office, he had send me an invitation to visit his university in Umea, to speak at their learning technology conference.

I received an email today from someone who is looking for online programs (certificate, masters, etc) that offer training in elearning. From the email - University of Calgary has a certificate, the University of Hull in the UK has a masters program, are there any others? Which ones are the best? I have no clue, but I'm hoping that someone can point to suggestions via comments, and/or point to places you would look.

Also wishing you a happy holiday is the US television station, NBC. NBC set up and conducted a "get together" in Second Life on December 20th. The event is now over, however, you can visit the virtual New York skating rink and Christmas tree in Second Life.

While I generally agreed with those who rose in opposition to his declaration, something still just didn't fit for me. Even when his call for evidence of learning in SL with his post Second Life Redux got a lot of responses, something still gnawed at me like a young child who's newest linguistic trick is "but why?

A great deal of research is being undertaken in the area of avatars.you know, the lifelike animated people that inhabit Second Life and other online worlds. One person doing work in this area is Amy L. Baylor at Floridia State University. She is the founder of The Center for Research of Innovative Technologies for Learning (RITL) which is creating these virtual trainers has found that learners tend to choose virtual trainer types that were similar in ethnicity to the learner.

Phil Green, Chairman of the eLearning Network has twisted my arm (once again) and persuaded me to take a trip in a balloon with seven of my e-learning colleagues. The trip up is likely to be smooth enough - it's the accelerated descent I'm more concerned about. Phil has organised an 'eLearning Balloon Debate' as an invitation-only event at Learning Technologies 2007 in London.

In An Inconvenient Truth , Gore makes a persuasive case that the world must take dramatic steps to curtail carbon dioxide emissions in order to reduce global warming. The Work-Based Learning Unit of e-Skills UK has published preliminary results from their research with employers and learners in the UK "to help understand why employers are currently investing in e-learning and the difference it is making to their business and staff." Some 209 organisations were surveyed (173 producing usable data) and 650 learners.

A tale of two experts on m-Learning - The People's Guide to mLearning. I want to raise a flag here in regards to self-directed learning. We can't yet guarantee that we have such learners (to the contrary). So just providing access is not sufficient, we need to push support. I think we can do one more thing, and we should: help individuals learn to learn.

Here is a great article from the eLearning Guild on avatars. If you are not familiar with the potential of avatars for e-learning check out this article by Raj Sheth titled Avatar Technology: Giving a Face to the e-Learning Interface. The article does a great job of defining avatars and describing the different types of avatars and provides examples of how they are used in a variety of settings.
