Ok, so the first month of the year is over. How are you doing with your resolutions? Here is a great tip for helping to achieve your resolutions or to achieve any goal you are seeking. One of the most effective ways to reach a goal is to write it down. This forces you to slow down, think through the issues and then put them down on paper or computer screen.

I'm at the opening session at ASTD TechKnowledge ( [link] ). I'll soon be doing a session on Blogging and Social Bookmarking for Personal and Group Learning. Tony Bingham, President of ASTD, is doing his introduction, and his content is: Web 2.0, personal learning, easy distribution of software (software as a service), video is here now, push to pull, teaching Gen Y (what he calls the netGeneration).

Just lately a lot of my time has been taken up with Second Life, if you have yet to try virtual worlds then let me recommend the experience. My principle reason for the whole venture is to see how this new semi-immersed virtual reality can be utilised for teaching and learning, even as an extension to our continuing work with Moodle. Here is an instructional design methodology that is worth investigating. It is called "Informed Design." Informed Design, is a design pedagogy developed and validated through several National Science Foundation (NSF) projects conducted by the Hofstra Center for Technological Literacy. Informed design prompts research, inquiry, and analysis; fosters student and teacher discourse; and cultivates language proficiency.

At the start of this term decided to try using my PDA to record parts of my lectures, and these recording are in range of 3 to 4 minutes. The particular course that I selected for this is my High Level Programming for level 4 students, and to date I have made about 40 recordings. But I thought I would tryout something of an experiment by making these recording available in two forms, one being a straightforward mp3, while the other would feature a speaking CrazyTalk avatar.

I just got results back from two pilots with the goal of evaluating the same, 15 hour training program. In one pilot, the program sponsor cajoled a bunch of colleagues into doing the program. He oversold the fun aspects of it, and undersold the real work and time requirement required. I generally agree with what Donald has to say, but on this post, I think he's right about collaboration vs. independent work, but draws a bad conclusion: Donald Clark Plan B: Dumbness of Crowds. First - I tend to agree with Donald that most Web 2.0 activities are more independent actions of individuals than true collaborative work (team work) on a work product.

I'm in the middle of designing and developing a new blended learning course on the whole subject of embedded learning/performance support. The course will consist of some synchronous and asynchronous online activities and a two-day workshop. My general philosophy is, as far as possible, to have the participants co-create the content in a wiki as an output from their work on the course.

I saw a post by Bill Ives - Conference Blogs on the Rise : Individuals have blogged about conferences for some time. It seems now that more conference events are sponsoring these blogs and trying to aggregate those blogging the conference. It is a way to start the event on a virtual basis prior to the start and then continue the conversations afterwards and provide an archive for what happen and what people thought about it.

I just saw an article/post by Dion Hinchcliffe - Enterprise mashups get ready for prime-time.
