Why a Wiki?

Experiencing eLearning

Our team uses a wiki to document our design and development processes, something I wrote about in a short column for the eLearning Guild’s Learning Solutions magazine. This weekend I was imagining a conversation between two people about the benefits of a wiki. This overlaps quite a bit with the reasons in my article, but it’s a more fun presentation with Xtranormal.

Pointing to the Five Moments of Learning Need

Integrated Learnings

I can remember a project a few years ago where the subject matter expert (SME) fought and fought to include his 20-step process (complete with details and charts) in the course we were developing. He eventually persuaded his boss and won out, so we built the process into the course. Feedback from the learners was not positive and ranged from comments like "what is this and why in the world would I need to know it" on down to, shall we say, less positive remarks.

Training to Learning – The Impossible Shift

Living in Learning

Now that title should generate a ripple or two on the pond, especially when I have been so vocal about the need for just such a shift. So…is this post a confession that I have changed my mind? Not quite. Not even. If anything, I am more passionate than ever, but over the years, I have gotten smarter about moving around obstacles that stifle momentum rather than fight through immovable walls of opposition or resistance.

Virtual Worlds #lrnchat

Clark Quinn

In last night’s #lrnchat , the topic was virtual worlds (VWs). This was largely because several of the organizers had recently attended one or another of the SRI/ADL meetings on the topic, but also because one of the organizers ( @KoreenOlbrish ) is majorly active in the business of virtual worlds for learning through her company Tandem Learning.

When we talk about the “industry”, we (and by “we”, I of course mean those of us in the industry) often refer to it as if it’s this monolithic thing that you can touch. The Industry. Ummm. Yeah. So. What is the eLearning Industry? Is it the vendors? -- The LMS companies, the custom content developers, the off-the-shelf content creators. Is it the tools we use to create eLearning?

Stop Hovering over Learners

Vikas Joshi on Interactive Learning

Helicopter Parents: Image courtesy The Telegraph, UK Helicopter parents, as we know, hover over kids, micromanaging every aspect of their lives. Unfortunately, like many other well-meaning actions, helicoptering can deliver more harm than good. It has been argued that too much hovering sometimes backfires, because kids learn their values backwards: they feel entitled to things that they must earn, they lack empathy where it is needed.

Making designing good learning easier

Creating Stellar Learning

Yet the failures are more from a lack of knowledge rather than inherent complexity. While there are some depths to the underlying principles that aren’t sufficiently known, they can be learned. However, a second level of embedding systematic creativity into the process is another component that’s also missed, however this time it’
