New Feature in Webinar Tool

Tony Karrer

Maybe I've not been paying attention, but in the webinar that I just finished, the tool GoToMeeting had a neat feature that showed the percentages of people who were paying attention (had the meeting visual in the foreground) vs. those who were not paying attention. These were shown in percentages - easy to see and understand. There was also a display of those in attendance vs. those who had left.

Is CPD a complete waste of time?

From the Coleface

It’s the time of year that I, like many other professionals, have cleared my desk enough to think about whether I have met with my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. And I wonder just how necessary it is for me to have to meet these requirements and document them. Do highly motivated professionals really need the burden of a compliance framework to ensure that they continue to be competent?

Google Trends

Lars is Learning

It's that time of year again, a time to reflect on trends past and future. Sparked by Tom King's comparison of authoring tools I thought I'd take a fresh look at what Google Trends can tell us about e-learning and the wider training industry. There is a seemingly endless debate over how to spell the name of what we do. Are we "e-learning" or "elearning" or "eLearning"?

Conspiracy Theory: Teaching Ethics

Kapp Notes

How do you teach ethics? Sometimes a lawyer comes to a company and speaks on the topic, sometimes it is part of a new employee orientation program and sometimes it is an e-learning module where you answer true/false or multiple choice questions.seriously does anyone think that type of training is going to impact ethical decisions? Instead, I think you should make everyone read three books, all about actual ethical breaches and then dissect and discuss the main characters and then talk about what

Diversity is…err, too diverse?

From the Coleface

A few times when I’ve been talking to potential clients about their wanting to have some diversity e-learning developed, it’s quickly become apparent that the task is not as easy as it looked at first glance. That’s because there are few topics as wide ranging as diversity and a key first step in e-learning is define what content you’re aiming to convey.

e-learning fails to walk the talk?

From the Coleface

December’s TJ has an article highlighting the importance of supervision for coaches as part of their continuing professional development. A survey of coaches by Hawkins and Schwenk showed that whilst 86% of coaches thought that supervision was important, only 44% were in regular coaching supervision. I like the delicious irony that approximately half the coaches who thought supervision was a good idea had failed to get round to it…clearly some barriers that they need coaching around.

Physics Lectures

I had seen these physics lectures before, but I was reminded via Stephen Downes and the NY Times article about professor Lewin's lectures and was telling someone about them just the other day. Thought I should definitely point you to them. I personally am compelled by watching something like Planet Earth. Professor Lewin has managed to create something akin to that experience on a topic that can be made extremely boring by most professors.
