eLearning Course Development

Tony Karrer

BJ Schone asks a good question in his post - How do you build eLearning courses? I have built our courses using a custom template created using HTML and JavaScript. They couldn't believe I wasn't using Lectora or another similar authoring product. They stressed that my courses would be difficult to maintain over time (in case I leave the company). My point of view was a little different: I chose this method because I have greater ability to customize courses as I please, and I can control every

Web Stats Meme Answer

Tony Karrer tagged me for a meme while asking fellow training and technology edubloggers to post their stats for compariative and research analysis purposes. 2007 Traffic Stats - Hopefully a Meme : eLearning Technology So I am posting mine, they are not as high as some and are not as low as others. However, my primary purpose of blogging is to keep a virtual "memory" of what is going on and the neat things I run into (I then review my blog whenever I am asked to present.it keeps my presentations

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Im a (K)nitwit!

Learning Visions

Cammy Beans Learning Visions Musings on eLearning, instructional design and other training stuff. Wednesday, January 16, 2008 Im a (K)nitwit! Its winter here in New England. A time when this womans thoughts turn to knitting. Or, rather, the desire to be a knitter. Cold nights coupled with a growing maternal nesting instinct, have forced me to buy some yarn, pull out the needles, and learn how to knit.

Happy 2008

From the Coleface

Welcome to 2008. I’ve had a fantastic start to the year, with the joys of becoming a father for the first time. Lilia is gorgeous, hard work at times and suddenly 9:30 pm has turned into an eminently sensible time to go to bed, rather than a time to move on to the second pub. Back in the world of work, the start of the new year means that the biggest e-learning event of the year is on the horizon.

Test SCORM Courses with an LMS

Tony Karrer

I was just asked by someone about how they could test a course they were creating against a particular Learning Management System (LMS) (in this case Docent 6.5). This is something we run into fairly often. We are developing a SCORM or AICC compliant course either custom or using an authoring tool. And we run into the same tough situation each time: If there's an integration issue, like the score or completion is not getting set appropriately, we want to be able to make changes to the course to

Wiki Course Authoring

Tony Karrer

In my Ten Predictions for eLearning for 2008 , I said - Wiki + SCORM + Add-ins will become more common for easy authoring. Not sure if he saw my post, but I was just reminded by Tim Seager from Xerceo about their Prescribe tool that provides: Full Wiki, RSS functionality that is SCORM conformant for tracking and managing competencies. He also pointed me to a video that shows the tool in action.

Games as Rewards in School

Kapp Notes

When it comes to video games, one school has taken the motto "if you can't beat them, join them" to heart and allows kids who do well in school to play video games as a reward. They decided that one way to motivate kids is to allow them to play video games and, indeed, if you want to see a motivated group of kids, watch them play a video game. so they decided to apply a little behaviorism and reward good kids with video games.

2007 Traffic Stats - Hopefully a Meme

Tony Karrer

I've seen a couple of posts ( Matt Cutts , Dave Taylor ) talking about their relative web statistics for 2007. While my stats are very low in comparison to theirs, I was hoping that I could entice fellow bloggers to post some stats about their traffic in 2007. I thought it might be interesting to share with each other and I'm guessing there will be a few surprises.

Elaboration Aids Learning

Kapp Notes

Lately, I've done a few instructor-led seminars and wanted to share a technique I use. I've also use this technique in a virtual classroom with the breakout room features (you can break students into private sessions) and whiteboard functionality. This method, I call it the “re-teach” method, involves engaging the learner by having them “re-teach” content to their fellow learners.

A mathematician's apology

Clive on Learning

One of the more unusual Xmas presents I received this year was a short book called A Mathematician's Apology (with friends like these.), a reflection on the value of his lifetime's work by the eminent Oxford and Cambridge mathematician, G H Hardy (first published in 1940 but this edition Canto, 2007). Now I'm not remotely qualified to critique this book, but Hardy is very quotable and I did want to share some of my favourites.

One prediction already on target

Clive on Learning

On January 3rd I laid out my e-learning predictions for 2008. One of these was: "We'll see more online rapid e-learning authoring environments come on the market, perhaps even open source." I was either inspired or lucky (you choose) because since then a beta of RapideL-i was announced and then earlier this week I was treated to a sneak preview of a new tool called Unison from Rapid Intake , the makers of Flashform.

BookFaced cheek!

Learning with e's

I had a message passed on to me this morning from a trusted friend (my wife, OK?): "Someone with a lot of cheek is cloning FaceBook profiles. This person copies our pictures and creates a profile similar to ours. Then s/he sends scrap, spam or garbage to our contacts or friends in Hi5 and other profile sites. Friends are insulted…or asked for personal information…" (Sounds like the Inland Revenue).
