10 online icebreakers

Joitske Hulsebosch eLearning

For the third time I was going through all my resources- files and bookmarks to find online icebreakers. I thought I'd do myself (and you) a favour by listing the most interesting ones. 10 online icebreakers (the picture relates to number 10!): 1. Two Lies and A Truth. Ask participants to list three interesting things about themselves. (I own two iguanas; I once shook hands with Tom Cruise; and I love to waterski.

Designing Learning

Clark Quinn

Another way to think about what I was talking about yesterday in revisiting the training department is taking a broader view. I was thinking about it as Learning Design, a view that incorporates instructional design, information design and experience design. I’m leery of the term instructional design, as that label has been tarnished with too many cookie cutter examples and rote approaches to make me feel comfortable (see my Broken ID series ).

Cursive Writing - Outraged?

Tony Karrer

A little more than a year ago, I published a post Touch Typing - Cursive Writing - Why? that asked why they would spend so much time teaching my kids cursive writing and not teaching them touch typing. The comment that I just received on this post was great and I couldn't let it be buried. I am as perplexed as you why many schools do not see the need for students to learn how to touch-type.

Focusing on the Do: Moore’s Action Mapping

Clark Quinn

Cathy Moore has a lovely post with a slideshow that talks about using action mapping to design better elearning, and it’s a really nice approach. While I don’t know from Action Mapping (tm?), I do know that the approach taken avoids the typical mistakes and focuses on the same thing I advocate: what do people need to be able to do ? The presentation rightly points out the problems with knowledge dump, and instead focuses on the business goal first, and then asks you to map out what

Michael Allen's E-Learning Annual

Kapp Notes

The other day I received my copy of Michael Allen's E-Learning Annual for 2009. It is a great collection of very interesting articles/essays about the future of e-learning. I have just started to read it and have found the "dueling articles" by Mark Prensky and Ruth Colvin Clark especially interesting. Good old fashion academic disagreement carried out in the page of the annual.

Conversation Searches

Tony Karrer

What are Conversation Searches? I often present around my Information Radar tools and methods, particularly my use of an RSS Reader. During those presentations, I'll mention what are sometimes called "vanity searches." These searches look for any mention of your name, company, URLs across blogs and other sites. For me, these searches primarily allow me to see what people are saying in response to something that I've put out there.

The problem with predictions is that they're almost impossible to make with any certainty. And if they cover too short a period, then it's easy for people to check back and prove you wrong.
