Multimedia Projects with xtranormal

Experiencing eLearning

A few weeks ago, Dave Ferguson shared Anne Derryberry’s interactive storyboard created with xtranormal. Dave was looking at this as a tool for instructional designers to create storyboards with more pop, but I’ve been thinking about this tool as a way for students to create content. One of the courses I’m currently working on is about project-based learning with multimedia.

Good Writing

Tony Karrer

What is Good Writing? Rubrics and Good Writing One of my favorite conversation topics is always looking at how school has changed from when I went through. When I was going through school, I often felt that my writing assignments were judged arbitrarily. Teachers would give you a B with little or no explanation. I still believe that content was relatively unimportant.

Monday Broken ID Series: The Introduction

Clark Quinn

First Post in the Series. This is one in a series of thoughts on some broken areas of ID that I’m posting for Mondays. The intention is to provide insight into many ways much of instructional design fails, and some pointers to avoid the problems. The point is not to say ‘bad designer’, but instead to point out how to do better design. One of the first things learners see is the introduction to the content; it’s the first place that they can be disappointed, and all too often they are.

A refreshing perspective of Web 2.0

E-Learning Provocateur

Today I watched this 6-minute video clip from MyRaganTV , in which Jim Davis, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of SAS , talks about that company’s approach to Web 2.0. I think Jim maintains a refreshing perspective of Web 2.0 in the corporate sector. SAS doesn’t just talk about transparency, integrity and collaboration: they breathe life into these principles through their application and approach to internal blogs, customer blogs and external social media.

On the road again

Well, this spring is shaping up differently than I expected. Instead of the doing the familiar talks or workshops in the usual places: Training’s Conference , eLearning Guild’s Annual Gathering , and ASTD’s TechKnowledge and International Conference , I’m doing new things in old and new places. Not that I don’t like those conferences, in fact I recommend them, it’s just that life takes funny turns (and I like challenging myself).

Low Cost LMS - Help Needed

Tony Karrer

I received an inquiry about the need for a low cost LMS solution and I've not had time to help this person with answers. I'm hoping folks can chime in with suggestions and resources. I'll try to aggregate them together. Situation description: I have talked to several vendors and have received quotes at the 6-8k (per year) range for the licensing. We have roughly 500 learners and would use the LMS for mainly tracking and registration of ILT courses, communication (possibly through message boards)

We recently finished watching a video series called Kamichu (we like anime ). It’s a remarkably cute series about a middle school girl who finds out she’s a god (apparently the Shinto belief system). There are some subtle digs at cultural artifacts like politicians, sweet explorations of the difficulties of romance, and funny running gags. I recommend it, but the thoughts it prompted are what I’m talking about here.

Think about it, the internet is just over 5500 days old. Content Quality

Tony Karrer

When I do sessions on eLearning 2.0 , I often will ask for the audience to provide a list of barriers or risks. Often the audience is quite good at identifying all the things that may go wrong or that will prevent them from doing any of this. And quite often one of the first concerns listed is content quality. If I allow people to edit a wiki, how will I know it's good quality?

User Control

eLearning Cyclops

I am a big advocate for user control. In my opinion, there are too many e-learning courses that do not allow users to navigate through the content as they wish or need. Lack of user control is contrary to many principles of adult learning theory. Allowing user control provides self-directed learning and allows users to determine their learning needs and what is relevant to their needs, all of which are important concepts in adult learning theory.

The Myth of "Best Practices"

bozarthzone

I get lots of requests for list of "best practices".in e-learning, in the virtual classroom, in instructional design, in classroom presentation. Here's the deal: there's no such thing. A "best practice" is best only in the precise, specific context in which it exists. I don't recall who first offered this analogy, but think of it this way: what works in my marriage won't necessarily work in -- and may even damage -- yours.
