Learning Styles, Brain-Based Learning, and Daniel Willingham

Clark Quinn

I’ve gone off on learning styles before because there’s a lot of fluff and not much substance. I’d been pointed to Dan Willingham ’s video on brain based learning, and in pointing it to someone else, found his one on learning styles. He’s a cognitive psychologist (my background, btw), and is putting out the research-based views on these topics.

Instructional Designers with ID Degrees? Survey Results.

Learning Visions

The great thing about blogs is that you don't even have to be around, and people still come visiting. I haven't posted in ages (hoping this will start to change as my work-life settles back in), but responses are still coming in to my survey. As of today, 166 instructional designers have responded to the survey: Do You Have a Degree in ID? About 34% of instructional designers have an advanced degree in ID.

Thoughts on Innovation.

Kapp Notes

Here are some interesting lectures on the concept of innovation. A couple are long but all are worth a listen. Many people mis-use the term "innovation" and it sometimes looses meaning when so many claim to be innovative. I think these three videos put the concept on innovation in the right position.

CCK08: let’so go for a walk in a wood and relax … « Insegnare Apprendere Mutare. A beautiful metaphor for CCK08. A massively open course like this is too complex to understand the whole thing at once the way you would know a traditional course. Instead, think of the course like a walk in the woods, where you get to know the woods at different levels and in different ways. tags: cck08 , connectivism , MOOC , learning.

A number of sources have recently been discussing the virtues and vices associated with creating games that raise social consciousness. One great resource are some postings by Jeff Cobb over at Mission to Learn. He has created two lists of games for change. Metaphors and Language of Learning

Oak Tree Seedling. The discussion around whether learning grows or is built has been terrific. I can definitely sympathize with Sarah Stewart’s comment about enjoying the conversation even if I’m not sure I understand it all. I’ve got a nice collection of metaphors for learning now: Building : This is the classic constructivist language, constructing and building your own learning.

Training Method Trends

Clark Quinn

Steve Wexler who runs eLearningGuild research has been producing some really interesting information recently. All of the data comes from surveys to the eLearningGuild membership (which is more than 30,000) and typically they have 2,000 - 3,000 respondents on surveys which is large enough to get pretty good indications. He recently provided me some information about what learning delivery methods were being used and particularly if they were trending up or down.

List to Learn, Learn to List

Kapp Notes

This month's ASTD Big Question is, again, a series of questions. Apparently one BIG question is not enough for the learning and development community. We aim to exceed expectations. If you have a to-learn list and are willing to share, and willing to share how you work with that list, that would likely be helpful information. I constantly have a "to-learn" list.

Test LMS

Clark Quinn

In the past, I've had a few posts around how you can test your courses under an LMS: SCORM Test Test SCORM Courses with an LMS One of the problems cited was the lack of available LMS test environments. Recently I've seen two possible approaches that seem quite interesting - although we've not yet tried them (so I would love to get feedback). One is ClassRunner.com a Moodle installation that allows teachers to get up and going cheaply.

Visualizing My Connectivism Learning So Far

To-Learn Lists

Clark Quinn

This month’s Learning Circuit’s Big Question is on: To-Learn Lists. The results this far have been really interesting to me. It appears that most of us (as is the case with me) don't keep a formal / tracked to learn list. Rather its an informal, ever changing list. It is impossibly long and things naturally fall off the bottom. However, the danger of not having a more formal list that is tied to goals means that likely they are not getting integrated into the to-do list and into daily lives.

I have a nice view from the fifth flooor out over the campus, with plenty of greenary and the big white tower glowering from the distance. I bumped into Jane Seale who had arrived just before me, and we made our way down to try to find registration.

Both startups use have two kinds of users involved who are going to want to do 1-to-1 communication through a variety of different communication approaches (text, phone, etc.) and now they want to explore providing video chat between the parties. An equivalent example (drawing from my eHarmony days) would be providing video chat in a dating site.

What if learning technologists ruled the world?

This was the question that Professor Gilly Salmon asked at her presentation at ALT-C in Leeds yesterday. Now I'm a bit of a fan of Gilly's work as a pioneer in the field of collaborative online distance learning. She stands out as an academic who's able to communicate in simple terms to a wide audience, with the pragmatism and common sense that can only be acquired through practice.

Learning is supposed to be fun - so I am adopting the approach of simply 'going with the flow' for the next 13 weeks.
