We are about to embark on a new Moodle roll-out for staff in September 08 with three phase programme spread over as many years that will in the first year simply require everyone to utilise the system as repository for lessons plans schemes of work and handouts. One of the principle incentives for this will be 1 the running don and removal of the competing Intranet drive and the e-Maturity drive from Becta.

Creating an Avatar in Google's Lively. Ok, so Google did create Google 3D Earth with some pretty cool 3D features as a venture into 3D worlds but now they are jumping in with both feet and offering (for free) a product called Lively. Here is an article on the release called Google Launches Virtual Reality Site As the article states: [Lively] is a three-dimensional software that enables people to congregate in electronic rooms and other computer-manufactured versions of real life.

The corporate sector is exploring a whole new world. Which world? The virtual world. What is a virtual world? A virtual world is a computer-generated environment that more-or-less replicates the real world. Arguably the best known virtual world today is Second Life. Anyone can download the Second Life Viewer from the Internet and set up a basic account for free.

“ Don’t teach kids mathematics, teach them to be mathematicians. (I believe it was Seymour Papert). It was in the scoping phase of a new project where this came to mind, and I realized that, depending on your definition of ‘mathematician’, I don’t want them to be mathematicians either, but I want them to be mathematical problem solvers. That is, I don’t necessarily want them to be able to create mathematical theories any more than I want them to be able to

Well, just over six months in, and I'm still here, albeit with a backlog of ideas/thoughts that really should be up here by now. So it's nice to find that this blog was selected as a Blog of the Week by the Learning Technologies team. A useful little motivator to step things up a little.

Once again I am teaching a class using virtual worlds, this class "Learning in 3D" will include the use of both ProtoSphere and Second Life. The quick six week class will cover just the basics of navigating in 3D worlds, building a small structure and learning about the different type of environments available. The first class had the usual Second Life chaos but it was a lot of fun for everyone.

Edupunk is anti-establishment apparently, and is a response to the corporate and institutional efforts to contain education. It is about destroying the boundaries of our oh so comfortable education systems. It is about wresting control from central authority and liberating the learner. Edupunk is certainly about using tools and services that are outside of the institution, beyond the walled garden, so to speak.

Apple is poised to take advantage of the learning, education and social media. in motion. See Apple's Modality Learning. iPhone learning production - the basics are easy enough. Of course, just anything else, if the content is bad, the learning will be bad. But the production could be as easy as 1-2-3 as shown below. I am not suggesting you should buy Toolbook.

In my post So what is blended learning? I put forward the following definition: A blended learning solution mixes social contexts for learning (self-study, one-to-one, small group, larger community) with the aim of increasing learning effectiveness, and/or mixes learning media (face-to-face, online, print, etc.) to increase efficiency, in the context of a particular learning requirement, audience characteristics, and practical constraints and opportunities.

Months and Months ago I mentioned how I am starting my first larger scale eLearning project in a posting titled Manager Training Program. I am now knee deep in the project and learning a lot along the way. I designed and developed a prototype for the first course and it is under review now. I am expecting that there may be some barriers I have to overcome due to the fact that this is a big change in how we facilitate training programs, and nobody likes change.

I stumbled upon eQuixotic Blog and was impressed with Chris' quality and mission. Chris talks about Apple's July 11, 2008 release of Modality Learning View Steve Jobs' Keynote Address at WWDC 2008. Comments: 1) In the training industry, many times, there is a reluctance to increase the quality of the aesthetics - the look and feel of programs. Cost and time are the usual culprits.

Still here in a very hot and humid Kuala Lumpur, attending the four day long IFIP LYICT Conference - 'ICT and Learning for the Net Generation'. Last night we had a memorable evening barbeque style Conference Dinner by the side of the hotel's luxury swimming pool. I don't wish to sound twisty, but it wasn't all glamorous. We had to send the wine back because it was off.

Text books cost a fortune these days. And they don’t age well. And they don’t contain local information. This morning I had a chat with former textbook publisher executive Erik Frank, who’s out to change the situation. He and another text veteran formed Flat World Knowledge to reverse the tide. Flat World proposes to offer e-texts by known authors to students for free.

I'm sat here in the foyer of The Saujana Hotel , surrounded by palm trees (the foyer is completely open air) and there is birdsong and cicada chirping all around. It rained last night, which cleared the air for a short while, but the oppressive heat is returning with a vengeance. Someone yesterday gave me an alternative to IFIP - 'International Friends in Interesting Places', and I guess that is what IFIP is really all about.

Well we did it. And it worked. Last time I was that nervous was when my (first) wife kept me waiting at the altar for 20 minutes over the odds, while her chauffer searched for a place to park. We are still married 22 years later, don't worry. Today was a technological success, where we linked 5 people together using Elluminate and managed a slightly flakey audio system in a very large and echoey hotel ballroom in Kuala Lumpur.
