Conference Thoughts

Tony Karrer

Hate to post again around better conferences but two things: 1. I just saw a fantastic post - Do We Need NECC that discusses a lot of the same issues. And there are some fantastic comments/trackbacks there. 2. On the original post - better conferences - there's been a call for moving this to a Wiki. I'm not really sure what the Wiki would look like, but it seems that there's an opportunity to have something along the lines of a Conference Patterns wiki.

Bad science masquerading as fact

From the Coleface

It was great to see Mike Clayton in July’s issue of TJ putting the spotlight on Mehrabian’s 7-38-55 rule of communication – this has to be one of the most misquoted pieces of research in the world of L&D. The common fallacy is that the research is saying that only 7% of the impact of a presentation is down to the words, and that the visual and the vocal represent 55% and 38% of the message respectively.

Writing, Learning, Knowing - Help Needed

Tony Karrer

I'm preparing some future presentations and articles. One thing I've really struggled with in past is how to get across the power of writing a blog as a tool that forces you to learning, especially to synthesize knowledge. In the past, I've used the analogy of the challenge during school of writing and how it forces you to really understand something.

Two situations recently have got me thinking about e-learning authoring tools. Firstly, I've been doing some more work on the script for The 30-minute masters which, if you remember, aims to teach the essentials of instructional design to subject matter experts in no more than 30 minutes. With the script now 1/3 complete and with a session agreed at the eLearning Guild's DevLearn 2007 in San Jose in November, my mind is turning to how I can convert this script into a half-decent piece of e-learn
