I climbed onto the tram, folded my ticket, and with some trepidation stuck it into an unmarked metal box. A happy ding announced my success. I did it! I correctly rode a tram in Amsterdam! Small victories like these make me love to travel. Every day I move from clueless to confident as I tackle questions like, “How do I peel and eat this hardboiled egg using only this tiny spoon?

What's your take on using audio in eLearning? For or against? Do you use audio on every slide because the client says people will think it's broken if you don't? (This has happened to me!) We've taken this up before and many of us IDs know the strategies for using audio most effectively by now. We know to avoid narrating text word for word, for instance.

I attended the CeBIT Expo at Sydney’s Darling Harbour this morning. While there wasn’t a lot that caught my eye in terms of e?learning (it is an IT event after all), I liked the look of these tough little tablet PCs that were being demonstrated by Motion Computing. Some questions from blog readers have alerted me to the fact that when Apple “upgraded&# Keynote 08 to create Keynote 09, they removed the ability to export slideshows as interactive Flash files. I’ve written a bit on this blog about how great it is that you can export from Keynote to Flash but…now you can’t! So: If you currently have Keynote 08, don’t upgrade.

Paul Angileri who write the blog There Is No Chalk just left a comment on my recent post Profile Photos (see also Profile Photo ): I once had someone comment to me on a non-professional email address of mine. They said it seemed to imply something negative. This was the only person ever to have mentioned it to me, and for the life of me I still can't see the person's POV on it.

A quick, very informal evaluation of my Online Professional Networking class. Several weeks back I held my last online professional networking class, which focused on using LinkedIn. And due to the bank acquisition and upcoming lay-offs, it had a very strong focus on using LinkedIn as a tool for employment networking. I'm writing blogging tips for a book we're writing and one of the tips is to create a rhythm of posting. I had a good blogging rhythm but now I seem to loose it! So I need tips how to keep your rhythm. All the holidays in the Netherlands starting from queen's day on 30 april are definitely fun, but don't help me to keep into any rhythm. But let's try to stick to a weekly rhythm and blogging about a past experience still lingering in my head.

Today I read an interesting article entitled: 'Seven habits of highly effective teachers' in the Times Education Supplement. It's an adaptation of Stephen Covey's self-help book: 'The seven habits of highly effective people' and I'm glad the TES has herded these ideas into a teaching context. Teachers are under a lot of pressure to perform and achieve good results, and it's not easy for them.

People already use their computers for things like checking email, surfing the web, and sharing the latest news on Facebook. Since that’s the case, why not design a course structure that mimics how they already use their computers? I see a lot of elearning courses and I’d say that most of them are linear and almost exclusively focused on sharing information.
