The State of Video in Education 2017

Video is one of the most popular methods used in online education. It is incredibly helpful when explaining and showing new concepts.

One thing is for sure: video isn’t going anywhere when it comes to online education. In fact, it’s going to keep growing in popularity. That said, we may start to see changes in the way it is delivered – particularly as micro-content begins to rise in popularity.

The company Kaltura performed a poll of over 1,000 educators to produce the infographic above. It should come as no surprise that the second most popular use of video is for remote teaching and learning. E-learning content without video is becoming a rarity these days.

This data echos what we discovered earlier this year we found from our own internal poll that 76.2% of LearnDash users indicated using video in their courses. It’s used because it works and learners actually prefer it.

If you have a course but aren’t using video then you should seriously consider finding places to implement it. Getting started is a lot easier than it used to be. In fact, there are online platforms available that make putting together a micro-content video pretty easy (and cost effective).

Alternatively you could hire someone to create your course videos. A simple Google search will yield plenty of results, or talk to people in your industry to get ideas. It may sound silly, but you could also leverage LinkedIn’s groups functionality to find videographers and instructional designers.

If you are looking to read up more on strategies for using videos in your courses, then here are five articles to get you started.
