If DevLearn 2011 at the Aria in Las Vegas did anything, it confirmed one certainty about elearning: elearning is exhilarating. eLearning is esoteric, cutting edge, tumultuous, and sexy. And elearning is an industry. The eLearning Guild hosted quite a conference.

Coming up in the near future: As I mentioned before , I’ll be in Sydney for the Australasian Talent Conference talking games and social learning, and workshopping mobile and elearning strategy. In June, I’ll be presenting at the DAU/GMU Innovations in eLearning conference that’s always been an intimate and quality event. There’s more to come: The CSTD annual conference in November in Toronto.

Go to any eLearning conference and you will see that the trade show is chock full of technology vendors. However, I am here to tell you that there is no one magic bullet in eLearning, particularly not amongst the myriad of tools available. An excellent authoring tool can no more create powerful and effective eLearning, than a terrific multipurpose garden tool can create an amazing garden, or the newest table saw can create an exquisite cabinet.

Wrapping up a few days in Las Vegas for this year's eLearning Guild DevLearn 2012 conference. So I missed a lot, but still had enough time to talk my head off and soak in a lot of elearning goodness. Not surprisingly, eLearning examples were not the first thing to pop into people's minds. We talked a lot about Design with a big D and then came back to elearning and what we can all do to be better DESIGNERS of elearning.

I like going to conferences: exchanging ideas, meeting new people, and just variety. I was also reflecting about what makes a good conference. I don’t know about CLO (my first), but I love the Guild events, and I was trying to figure out why.

Instead of the doing the familiar talks or workshops in the usual places: Training’s Conference , eLearning Guild’s Annual Gathering , and ASTD’s TechKnowledge and International Conference , I’m doing new things in old and new places. Not that I don’t like those conferences, in fact I recommend them, it’s just that life takes funny turns (and I like challenging myself).
