Company leadership wants loan processing training – NOW, and the ISD was asking, “What would you do?”. Continuous Learning Discovery & Consulting ADDIE LinkedIn new classroom performance consulting work context | THE LEARNING GENERALIST MAY 31, 2010 One Trick Pony or Problem Solving Consultant? In my experience I see a lot of fanaticism in certain circles -- elearning exponents can't look beyond their trade; trainers swear by the classroom; informal learning geeks scoff at the LMS and novices just follow the loudest fanatic. I'm currently spending most of my time on ThoughtWorks University - our graduate consultant programme. settled for a bento box at an Asian stall. | | | | | | | DESIGNING IMPACT OCTOBER 28, 2009 Design Consulting Tool: Empowering Leaders So You Can Create Effective Design Whether it be eLearning, blended or in-person training, a learning initiative, product, course, application or event, all of these solutions have one undeniable MUST HAVE: a leader. Tags: consulting design management learning strategy There are many dynamics that ultimately impact the quality, cost and effectiveness of a learning solution. How do the actions of a learning leader impact design, costs and [.]. | | INTEGRATED LEARNINGS MARCH 28, 2012 Are You a Performance Consultant? Let’s face it – the title “Instructional Designer” comes with a reputation that designing instruction or training is all that we do. We have been placed into a box that can be a real challenge to get out of, especially when it comes to moving into more of a performance consulting type of role. How do we break beyond the barriers that have been placed on us and convince our clients to look beyond training as the only available solution? So…what is Performance Consulting, anyway? Here is an illustration to help clarify the concept of performance consulting. | THE LEARNING GENERALIST JUNE 21, 2010 Social Learning isn't all about the Tools - 4 Factors to Consider Most importantly we're helping graduates learn the ropes by participating in a true to life project, and in that we're using a workscape to drive home the skills they'll take into their jobs as consultants. Think about it - most training aims at indoctrination and homogeneity. Tags: facilitation social learning learning elearning consulting Here's what I think. | | | | | | | | | -
THE LEARNING GENERALIST | MONDAY, AUGUST 30, 2010 Think Workscapes, not Training While a huge portion of our training budgets goes towards creating the content for learning, we seem to ignore that people learn only when they see a strong need. As instructional designers , we need to workscape our training programs so they can provide our learners the affective context around which they can pull and retain information themselves. The purpose of training and development is to accelerate this process - and yet we don't pay adequate attention to 'workplace learning'. Recognising False Elegance I grew up in this industry doing a lot of standup training. MORE >> -
SPARK YOUR INTEREST | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2011 What does 2011 look like for consultants? Actual thought leaders – elearn magazine’s list. am not sure that I have anything unique to add to those perspectives, but have promised you predictions, so… Being a small, independent consultant in Canada, where my market is pretty localized and my clients are fairly regionalized, I have come to think of myself as an economic bell-weather. When the economy tanked, so did my consulting work, but since late fall 2010, things have picked up considerably. Maybe training groups need to include budget for the dispensation of devices in their project plans too? MORE >> -
THE LEARNING GENERALIST | MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2009 The Agile Elearning Design Manual - Think Small (Iterations, Action Maps, Storyboards, and Mini-Modules) We explored the waterfall approach towards elearning development in a prior post of this series. Customers get to see working elearning pretty late in the process - as a consequence we run the risk of an endless cycle of amendments. Actual deployment takes months from actual initiation of the project - this delays learner feedback, which is key to evolving the training content and increasing effectiveness. Can we release working elearning quicker, to harness learner feedback sooner than later? This said the outputs of an Elearning Inception should be limited. MORE >> -
TONY KARRER | MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2009 Workplace Learning Professionals Next Job - Management Consultant Are there training departments? What will current members of training departments be doing in 10 years? Some people are suggesting getting rid of training departments and starting fresh. Others, including myself, don't believe training departments will go away any more than educational institutions will no longer exist. There will always be some level of training/education required. ut I think it's fair to say that most every response expects the role of training to either diminish or to change significantly in the next 10 years. What are they doing? MORE >> -
THE LEARNING GENERALIST | FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 2010 The Six Hats of a Trainer Today's post follows on from two of my previous posts of a similar nature, which you apparently found interesting: From Training Specialist to Learning Generalist Instructional Designers need more skills than just writing! My friend Vijay Colaco takes strong objection to the word ' training' and believes it's akin to how we make animals do our bidding. In time, the organisation also learns that elearning or training or social media aren't silver bullets and that every extrinsic effort to creat learning falls flat without the intrinsic support of coaching and mentorship.
