Established eight years ago by my friend Nick Van Dam, eLearning for Kids serves up free lessons to millions of kids aged five to twelve. eLearning for Kids is run by volunteers and funded with contributions. Khan Academy is popping up everywhere!

The term eLearning also enjoyed simultaneous discovery. No wonder eLearning sprouted up in many places. I have been credited with the first use of eLearning on the web. Update : I just came upon an article on the web that talks of eLearning in 1997. That pre-dates my earliest eLearning articles. e was in the air.

Richard Straub writes cogently about the lay of the eLearning land. The case study of eLearning at St George Bank is enlightening; I was intrigued because I’ve talked with these guys and know they’re thoughtful. The first found a paucity of information about the results of corporate eLearning.

eLearning is not a big cost-cutter. Corporations are flocking to eLearning for all the wrong reasons. This sort of fanciful thinking tripped up eLearning ten years ago. In that first wave of eLearning, venture capitalists and the learning industry saw fortunes to be made by replacing instructors with computers.
