Before you jump into purchasing a LMS it makes sense to cover the basics, understand the jargon, decide if you want to go it alone or hire a consultant and last but not least realize you are not alone in the process. LMS – Learning Management System – most commonly sought out by folks. The most common features within this area for a LMS, include 360 feedback, skill gap analysis, performance reviews and skill paths. Some RCAT vendors have the Tin Can API as well as some LMS vendors. Last year, I wrote a piece entitled “ The Standalone LMS is Dead ”. Last week, Dave Wilkins of Learn.com wrote a piece entitled “ A Defense of the LMS (and a case for the future of social learning) ”. Tangential to Dave’s arguments though, after reading, digesting and thinking through his 6,245 dissertation, I still believe the standalone LMS is dead. He believes the LMS is alive and kicking. Multi-tenant (extended enterprise) (multi-portals). “I need an inexpensive LMS, what do you recommend?” Topyx for example, charges you extra to remove their name from your LMS.  If you have an extended enterprise platform – charging you extra for each skin, and in some cases each portal (with this angle – the first portal is free, after that a fee).
