Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Why choose SharePoint for Education? Thought Leader Interview with Dave Coleman

SharePoint and Assessment

Do you think SharePoint is viable as a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment)? VLE” is quite an old term now, and if you were to ask five people in a room what VLE is, you’ll probably get 5 different answers. For example we have SharePoint as our managed learning platform, our learning platform but also as our website as well. Community Interview Colleges Office 365 Schools Universities VLEDave is a Microsoft MVP and has been working with SharePoint in education for nearly a decade. So we’re quite mature with the platform. I’d rather have a wiki than a Blackboard VLE.

If I had a hammer, er no wrong tape responsibility for delivering a distance learning MA or BA Programme I’d rather have a wiki than a blackboard VLE to administer the programme and to co-ordinate learning activities. The discipline of learning technology and the individuals who are part of this growing professional ‘group’, according to Peacock et al (2009), can have a valuable influence on all aspects of, for example, eResearch as we can demonstrate the role of support to help researchers “make informed decisions about whether and how to use e-learning tools to conduct qualitative e-research&# and that a “more inclusive model of the Learning Technologist’s role in academia could help address the potential polarisation of the profession into researchers and practitioners&#.&#.

Totara: re-shaping Moodle for corporate use

Clive on Learning

typical VLE is designed to support formal academic courses, whether face-to-face, online or blended. So it has been more than a little surprising to me over the past few years to see Moodle, an open-source VLE, used so enthusiastically by corporates. Various companies have offered customisation of Moodle to make it fit better to corporate needs, but TotaraLMS is the first example (as far as I know) of an out-of-the-box Moodle implementation designed wholly for corporate needs. But the nature of those resources and activities is typically very different.

The user interface on most VLE/LMS technologies is often too complex for students, who spend much more time trying to navigate and discover content than they do actually learning that content.
