Online courses must die!

E-Learning Provocateur

Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Unlike a VLE, an ILE is strictly informal. A touch dramatic, isn’t it? Now that I have your attention, please bear with me. There’s method in my madness… The myth of rapid authoring.

Military students for example may be serving overseas, or in submarines. The MentorBlog project for example, employed the use of two-person blogs to connect students with their professional mentors, who may never have had the opportunity to meet face to face (Wheeler and Lambert-Heggs, 2008). Below are four reasons why the Social Web and associated media are changing higher education.

The user interface on most VLE/LMS technologies is often too complex for students, who spend much more time trying to navigate and discover content than they do actually learning that content. An example of transparent design is where the technology interface is so familiar or simple that students need to expend no mental effort using it. Further Reading Norman, D. A.

That would give the student a sense of accomplishment while in the midst of a multi-year program, and I imagine showcasing one’s backpack on the university’s VLE would become rather competitive. For example, Mozilla issues its Div Master Badge upon successfully using the div tag at least 2 times in its Webmaker Project. It is true they are uneasy bedfellows.

An example I use is the mandatory fire safety course. Encouraging more of a user-generated and peer-to-peer learning environment may not be to everyone’s taste so a VLE such as Moodle will give more control. Sodexo’s learning team sought feedback and made some changes and enhancements for 2010, laying the groundwork for more learning and its virtual learning environment (VLE). To create a sense of place, Sodexo’s VLE incorporates renderings of the company’s North American headquarters building and the following features: • An auditorium to view webcasts and listen to updates from senior management. • An idea widget, integrated with other areas within the VLE, to enable brainstorming and collaborative problem-solving. and international guests.

You could see where we might place formal learning using a VLE, or where students might meet to chat using Facebook, for example. Collaboration is where two or more people work together to achieve a common objective. In education, the common objective is usually to learn specific content, skills or competencies within defined areas. It simply amplifies it. But it's far from perfect.

There has been a bit of discussion on Twitter, and at our recent ALT-C VLE symposium, on the importance of naming things. At the VLE is Dead symposium , there was an issue over the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). There are examples of over-description in Pidgin because no shared name exists for the object being discussed. And just how does a name come about? you know.

None of this happens in an LMS (or VLE), in fact, that systematic design of that system is anathema to all of these crucial elements of educating in the digital era. But the fact they all just tried to do MOOCs (bigger online classes in a bigger "open" LMS) might be a good example of their limitations. I am not a fan of the MOOC as they''re sold by Coursera, Udacity, and the like.

End of Year Conference

Moodle Journal

I was asked this week to provide a short session on using our Moodle vle for the for our end of year Teaching and Learning Conference here at the College. Lets face it, getting a vle to work for you is not simply about knowing your way around the menu options, its equally about deployment in support of a blended teaching delivery, at least that’s the way that I am seeing it. The idea seems to be that the session should address the interests of basic users in the first half and those more experienced practitioners whishing to move on to something more ambitious in the second.

This is in reference the immense and rapidly expanding technology tools. It is tough to stay on top of all the emerging tools. However, being involved in an e-learning community is a big help. For me it is a blog community and following many experts on Twitter.
