The guys at Kineo do a great job at sharing their expertise in the e-learning space. I have been reading through a few of Kineo’s rapid guides and tip sheets and i love them!

Their expertise and focus on employee knowledge sharing made them one of the very few pure social software providers that has had a eye on social learning use cases all along. Tomoye was a good (and rare) example of a social software company that had both the vision and domain expertise to successfully do social learning; they just struggled to be generally noticed. Consolidation activity is picking up in the provider markets, and the market for enterprise social software is no exception (see Josh’s post yesterday about SuccessFactors and Inform ). Two of the leading providers

The UpsideLMS now gives users the ability to create and participate in such communities, letting users share their knowledge and expertise with others in their community. That the LMS needs to incorporate social learning elements is no longer a point of debate but both a question of survival for the LMS itself and also a test of how the LMS handles the balance of both the elements of training and the ‘networkedness’ of the social learning . We’ve been hearing of experts commenting that LMSs today don’t come with appropriate social media technology built in.

If you like to seek out source research as I do, then you’ll enjoy Ericsson’s (and others) impressive work that has been collected in the Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance. Highly skilled performance in all aspects of life and work can be developed by the rough equivalent of 10,000 (10 years or so) hours of increasing specific, targeted and mindful practice in a domain of expertise. I’m back from some vacation where I read Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers on the beach at our cottage (along with some very funny David Sedaris).
Even if you haven’t read Outliers yet you probably know that it sets out to dispel myths that intelligence or innate ability are the primary predictors of success.

Thus, I am interested in not only the quantitative side, the idea that all of us can become teachers, but also the qualitative side, that all of us can become better teachers (and learners). Part of the reason why I think this tearner model is possible is because we’re already redefining what “expert” and “expertise” means . We’ve had degree programs, certification awards, and other formal means for acknowledging someone’s expertise in a tangible way. For a number of years, I’ve been pondering how the Snowflake Effect 1 could influence learning. For those who are new to this

wonder if the problem in this case isn’t so much about content expertise as it is about being able to communicate with the SMEs effectively. I’ve always kind of looked at the content expertise as a bonus; it can help you come up with real-life examples and makes it easier to speak the same language as the SMEs. 8221; I also wonder if an instructional designer with more content expertise and experience would be less effective In the discussion on the course writer vs. instructional designer and SME models of development, Pdrum left this comment :
