Experts have the benefit of elaborate mental schemas, which have developed over time and enable them to see the important patterns and make sense of all the cause and effect relationships that relate to their areas of speciality.

Beware who's selling informal learning

There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that historically we have underplayed the importance of informal learning, whether that's experiential, on-demand or social. Experts suffer from the curse of knowledge. So be cautious of oldies like me if, in their enthusiasm, they over-sell the idea of informal learning.
