For example, if you build something that integrates with Facebook, Twitter, etc. If you can integrate with Facebook, Twitter, or similar products and you have some kind of viral aspect, then that could make you more interesting. And if you are able to use it with twitter, Facebook, etc. Islands have a hard time making it.

I actually think that Facebook and Ning are heading in the right direction by becoming platforms for social networking solutions. Facebook maybe represents a new way to stay in touch with folks, but it doesn't take much time and it really becomes a different way to email. Again, I'm not so sure I agree.

This is also a good direction in that it starts with something that you own as an individual - your blog (as opposed to starting within the walls of Facebook). While that sounds somewhat like OpenSocial , I'm still not sure that I believe that OpenSocial gets me what I really want/need - interacting with the social graph across sites.
