The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). Yeah, I know we have just jumped into January, but in a review of the past several months, authoring tools continue to follow a similar path amongst themselves with certain feature sets.

Open up any authoring tool (okay, most of them) and one item that you will see is the ability to add PowerPoint. Privacy and Cookies” Not a fan of that. On other slides you see “terms and privacy/cookies” Right now you have apps for LiveApps under supposedly video, that is mostly targeting education.

Cost is a key factor, and while authoring tool vendors are jumping into VR with new functionality, the truth of the whole matter is that VR headsets haven’t punched thru the L&D and/or training departments across the globe. . Let’s move on from Facebook already. Mimicking what they see in social media. Low expectations.

Now before you argue about “security&# or “privacy&# , you can create (even now using mashups or some APIs) the ability to lock down or block certain areas.

I now pronounce you Authoring Tool and LMS, you may now integrate/interface. I’m still a believer that it is wise to use a 3rd party authoring tool rather than use an authoring tool built into a LMS. You do not have to build an authoring tool from scratch. From a LMS vendor perspective there are a lot of pluses.

Open ID (Example – Able to login with your G-mail account, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Outlook 365, etc.) – Many people do this every day out on the web. Includes templates (can be edited) for Terms of Use/Privacy terms/Etc. This is still rare in the industry. Again, Why? Another, come on, it is 2021 (soon to be 2022).
