Clearly this is a different use of PLE's than those outside the firewall, for free rangers, and for learning from everything of personal interest. The enterprise provides tools to employees that they can use as part of the PWLE. I would have trouble separating a PWLE from the rest of my life, let alone the rest of my learning.

Stephen Downes commented on my recent post - Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and said - I am opposed to the trend coming from the corporate learning side of the house to treat PLEs as work tools. If it's captured in a system inside the corporate firewall, it won't go outside.

then shouldn't you make sure you provide these tools now rather than having tools adopted that are outside the firewall and personally owned where you will lose the content if the employee leaves? Enterprises that love PLE's Cross battles Downes: is corporate learning corrupt?

This sounds a lot like a personal learning environment, personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal work and learning environment (PWLE) and PIM. For example, Personal Learning , PLE , PWLE , PKM are all pretty closely related. Yes there are distinctions, but probably not worth considering.

For folks who are not passionate about their work -- many who reside within the traditional, corporate firewall -- the PWLE is Pointless. Folks who are passionate about what they do will find their personal and professional learning environments co-mingling. Work does not end for the day and then life begins.
