Then my mind’s eye flashed to a herd of lemmings dashing over the same cliff as their predecessors. Given the report was focused on LMS I wondered if “learning technology” was code for LMS and performance support technology would remain separate and apart from learning strategy.

It was Flash-based; top drawer content, and we wound up perpetuating performance impact shortfalls with much greater efficiency. We began to blend training with some on-line content. It was good stuff. It was sexy. We were deploying learning. We were not implementing learning, and there is a significant difference between the two.

Both of those examples from my own experiences flash back when I think about the prospects of integrating EPS in any organization. My point is simply this – being ready to deploy any manner of change is not the same as being at a state of readiness to implement effectively and ensure sustainable adoption across the user population.

We sold sexy flash-based on-line courses. Training as a profession has always sort of been in a “sales” role. Selling the shift from classroom training to on-line e-learning, and then back again as a compromise to protect a draft pick and a player to be named later. We sold the need for a big honking LMS.

Our Flash programming sizzles with the best, and our Level 1s and 2s speak an undeniable truth and that truth we can defend to the death…or to the moment of an unanticipated down-sizing…whichever comes first. Our LMSs are doing exactly what they are supposed to do. Our training programs are as effective as training can be.

Forget ROI on that venue…better the effort spent on a new LMS or something that has buttons and flashing lights. No bean counter I know is going to buy into any of the soft dollar stuff you throw down as proof. So…how have you re-invented and/or re-branded your training efforts?

Our design efforts cannot deliver the results we need through shifting creative juices to sizzling, flash-based learning assets – the focus must be on the performer – and in their work context. When and where we support the performer becomes a crucial design consideration.
