Earlier today, I received a link to the Flash Plugin roadmap. A lot of elearning content today was designed and developed using Flash and that will continue in the foreseeable future. The roadmap was interesting because it points to some items that could possibly impact how we use Flash for delivering eLearning.

The Open Screen Project was started to help create a singular experience on multiple devices (using Flash) be it Computers, Mobiles, TV or Game consoles. Obviously, using Flash platform tools offered by Adobe. Also porting Flash runtimes on handheld devices has been made royalty free (which wasn’t the case earlier).

With increasing bandwidths and better compression techniques available, use of videos in Flash platform based eLearning courses is on the rise. Before using videos in your Flash project, you would need to encode them in a format compatible with Adobe Flash (FLV or MPEG-4). However, often we find videos not being used optimally.

Looks like a desire to speed up their open-source development around the Flash platform. We advocate the need of openness at Adobe especially for their Flash runtimes. Adobe has some great development tools like Flash Builder, Flash CS5 which target the runtimes – Flash Player and Adobe AIR.

Also Adobe has announced that they would be supporting the WebM video format in the next release of Flash Player. This new format may just become a de-facto audio/video delivery standard in the future as the web browsers like Firefox, Opera and Chrome have already confirmed supporting this format.

Apple has revised the Developer Program License Agreement to ban the use of cross compiler tools like Unity3d, Appcelerator’s Titanium, Adobe’s Flash CS5 etc. The new update in the Apple’s Developer Program License Agreement has once again broken Adobe’s hopes of running Flash based apps on the iPhone and iPad.

Gordon, a flash runtime written in javascript, is an interesting project that recreates the Flash Player into svg using javascript from a flash source swf file. Although you cannot edit every little thing inside the game, it still gives you a nice launch pad for creating simple games. This is an interesting direction.
