Mobile Learning. It’s all about “mobile” It is about time! I was very excited to see the number of vendors who showed off mobile capabilities with tablets and even smartphones. The bottom line – they were finally realizing that mobile learning was the place to go. IMO, this is not mobile learning.

Simply put, one vendor has over 200 Flash-based templates in their product. The assessment tools can be quite expansive and include mobile outputs. Surveys and Polls can be instant (via mobile). . Microsoft has announced that their next browser version will support only HTML5 and not Flash. Other vendors are falling suit.

A higher ed system should have a strong mobile component with on/off synch native apps. I love that they get the whole “mobile” angle, but again, wish it went beyond the same ol same. Mobile app and thus m-learning available as well. Yet, so many systems in these verticals fall flat. . The Kindle app is a novelty.

Samsung Galaxy S is expected to be the first real challenger to the iPad, it runs on Android OS, offers Flash 10.1 Again, the iPad runs only with HTML5, not Flash 10.1. True, the other tablets and Samsung offer Flash 10.1, We know that if the browser supports Flash 10.1, but they offer HTML5 too. Browser Agnostic.

By viewing the consumer market, there is huge growth in this area, especially for people who have mobile devices. PGP (Portable game players) are listed number three only behind smartphones and tablets for mobile devices sold. Uses 20% of computer resources compared to 40% for Flash – this makes a big difference when someone is trying to view anything, regardless of their internet connection (DSL, Cable, Modem, T1, etc.). No geolocation in the mobile app. Again, this is a universal problem for any conference that has a mobile app. Then, get this – they did a flash mob to some song about heroes, which I forgot already. The mobile app. I talked to a vendor recently about geolocation and how long it would take or cost to add to a mobile app. He told it me it is easy to do and would take little time, especially if the mobile app, existed already. Works only in Flash at the moment, so forget about seeing those courses on any iOS device.
