Free Ning Applications

Today, Ning made a bunch of free apps available for download. I have added five of them (Ning’s limit) to the Internet Time Community to assess how they work. Since the top menu of a Ning community is limited to 14 items, I collapsed some links into sub-categories. Mouse over Add-ons to see the new apps.

Unfortunately, Ning has decided to close down its free service and requires account holders to move to paid subscription. Ning's decision shows the volatility of funding web 2.0 companies; it is risky to use free Web 2.0 services but it does not mean that free services are not worth using.

Transferring from Ning to Grou.ps

The Internet Time Community has been hosted on Ning for a little over three years. I was shocked and saddened when Ning announced that its free service was ending. Lots of non-profits had signed up on Ning. Ning could have at least provided a decent migration path away from their service. I opened up a new Grou.ps

I expected Ning to close it when they went to pay-to-play. After all, their site says: Deadline for Selecting a Ning Plan Has Passed. We are no longer offering or supporting free Ning Networks. If you haven’t selected a plan for your free Ning Network, you can no longer access the network.
