If you are thinking of creating an educational game but don't want to invest a lot of money, you can try out these free software programs (or free for 30 days in some cases), some are 2D and some are 3D. There is a built-in programming language, which gives the user the flexibility of creating games with Game Maker.

I feel that C as a structured introduction to programming has a lot to offer students new to the subject area. One of the many issues that arise when you teach any programming language I have found is going to be that of a compiler.

GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) – fantastically named piece of freeware that works on most operating systems for photo retouching, image composition and authoring. Survey Monkey has been around for a while but still a great tool for gathering user feedback and can also be used to pre-assess knowledge gaps.

7-Zip – This is the program I use for creating and extracting zip files. It also strips out any freeware that piggybacks on a lot of free stuff out there. The little windows to test things is helpful. The price is right – FREE! Notepad++ – This is my editor of choice.

Hot Potatoes is not freeware, but it is free of charge for those working for publicly-funded non-profit-making educational institutions, who make their pages available on the web. It uses 3D graphics and a drag-and-drop interface to facilitate a more engaging, less frustrating first programming experience.
