On the other hand, I had lunch the other day with Joe Miller, who is the VP of Tech for Linden Labs.  He recently was talking about the iPad and really sees it as a game changer in ways that are subtle and insightful.  I have had my head down cranking out the manuscript for my mobile learning book. The deadline for the first draft is breathing down my neck, and I’ve been quite busy with some client work as well.

Computer games now play a major part in most young people’s lives. In March 2008, a government-funded report from the DCSF indicated that sales of games for the under-12 age group represented nearly three quarters of the total UK games market. 87% of 5-16 year olds have a games console at home, and the enormous success of the Nintendo Wii has shown that new technologies can reach and hold audiences who never expected to enjoy playing computer games. However games still struggle with their association with frivolity, violence and mindlessness.

He emphasized that the community was gathered to discuss "worlds" (not "games"), and that many saw VW's as the evolution of the 3D Internet. Keep an eye on Linden - with a new CEO and lower costs, they are aware of the shortcomings of SL and are actively looking to overcome and partner with solution providers. One interesting list from Curtis Conkey (NAWC) was on the difference between games and VW's (as a side note, I think some of these I attended the Federal Consortium on Virtual Worlds last week, and apart from several technical/sound glitches, the conference went very well.
Sue Singer (Linden Labs) talked and showed more in SL and discussed how SL relies on learning collaboration. I attended the Federal Consortium on Virtual Worlds at the National Defense University on Friday. This was the "first annual" event put on by IRMC, and overall, it was a success. It sparked a lot of great conversations in real world.
