When I want to know something, the first places I’ll look are Google, Wikipedia and YouTube. The massive popularity of social networking and sharing sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Yammer, Pintrest, Flickr… the list goes on and on, is testament to the fact that we humans love to use the web to interact with other people.

We supplement this with Google Docs for collaborative document creation, have started using Prezi for storyboarding complex branching scenarios and Mindmeister for top level instructional design. People in my wider network usually contact me by phone, Twitter or LinkedIn but not Facebook – I keep that for personal use.

How to Harness Informal Learning

I might, for example, seek the answer to a question via a Google or YouTube search, Twitter or by tapping into my online networks. Informal learning includes, amongst other things, observing others, asking colleagues, calling the help desk and trial and error. Increasingly, technology also comes into the equation.
