They provided just enough to make us dangerous with HTML, Flash, Photoshop and Authorware. I believe they will still be very present in corporate training in 2015, but will integrate more informal learning tools along with mobile learning, virtual worlds and alternative reality games (ARG). It’s the only way to get multimedia on mobile devices. Simply speaking, HTML is the language that the Web is written in, and HTML5 is the most recent version of it. And just recently, Adobe announced that it is stopping development on the version of Flash Player that is used on all other mobile devices, as well.

They were never inexpensive but come on – $2,299 for their rapid e-learning authoring suite – includes mobile (prices do drop if you purchase multiple but still 10-25 licenses runs at $1,954). Platte Canyon – Toolbook 11 (full version) $2,795 per license. Fear of the Mobile Bogeyman aka HTML5. Fear and Tin Can.

However, it all settled down to roughly Toolbook, Authorware and IconAuthor. HTML + simple JavaScript AJAX Flash each has different characteristics and quite different implications in different kinds of environments. And add into the mix, mobile delivery. I used to love these tools.

I will be dating myself here, but so much of the orthodoxy in the instructional design process was forged back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when the only Computer-Based Training (CBT) tools were Toolbook for the PC, and Hypercard for the Mac. WBT looked exactly like CBT, but was now HTML/Flash based rather than proprietary formats.
