Of course the beauty of this crystal ball gazing is that if you’re proved right at the end of the year then you clearly have an in-depth understanding and unrivalled insight into the world of learning technologies. Others ‘played safe’ with predictions that most of us could make about operating in global markets, facing increased competition, the current economic climate and the political landscape etc so we’ll focus on those predictions that are perhaps a little more forward thinking and of particular relevance to learning & development. Introduction It’s that time of year when everyone seems to feel compelled to generate their list of ‘Top Ten Predictions’ for 2010 – or perhaps their Top Five or Top Seven!

The Best from the eLearning Learning Community

I've always been a big believer in the value and power of informal learning. Over the past few years, I've written quite a few posts about informal learning. Informal Learning - Let's Get Real Informal Learning - Let's Get Real - Part II Elves, Measuring Results and Informal Learning Formalizing and Investing in Informal Learning Numbers and Informal Learning The Real Challenge around Informal Learning More on the Form of Informal The challenge for me has always been the The Paradox of Informal Learning (Form of Informal?) - it's defining systems
A comment from Phil LeNir on last week’s informal learning strategy post got me thinking more about the human element with regard to informal learning.  It’s easy to get so wrapped up in creating or linking learning assets for quick access that we forget about enabling the human interactions that are really the most effective way we learn informally. As I see it, there are five key human roles in an informal learning strategy: Subject matter expert (SME).
In my last post I listed ten strategies for integrating learning with work. They are a combination of concepts and methods that build knowledge and bring learning into day to day activities and workflow. Both can improve informal learning without pulling people way from the job for formal (classroom or e-learning) training. I discussed the first three strategies in Part 1 .

I’ve worked in learning design and management in both business and higher education settings and the differences in how e-learning technology is used in these two worlds is striking.   Business e-learning has focused on short self-paced, independent, interactive learning module typically delivered via an LMS designed to store, deliver and track progress (think Plateau/SumTotal etc) . In contrast, higher education e-learning has been build on their tradition of distance learning and courses delivered over longer periods of time (usually a semester), using LMS systems built on collaborative environments that support communication between students, instructors and peers (think Blackboard/Web CT).
and 3D internet technologies can be leveraged create distinct and differentiated learning modalities for our MBA programs. As I thought about my new role I began to wonder how my perspective on the thoughtful application of technology would change if I put on my IBM Consulting hat and thought of my students as clients. How would they rate me in terms of engagement and transformational learning given that they live in an age of permanent, persistant I am about 60 days into my new role here at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business . Susan Stucky (IBM) was the keynote speaker. She had a good presentation with bits of valuable information, but it seemed a little scattered and really didn't get into the details of how IBM is applying virtual worlds (other than an example of how they conduct rehearsal exercises"). When e-Learning came along, people held the same structure from classroom and text (i.e. I attended the Federal Consortium on Virtual Worlds at the National Defense University on Friday. This was the "first annual" event put on by IRMC, and overall, it was a success.
My background includes things like being the CTO of eHarmony (online marriage matching based on personality profiles and controlled communication) from its launch through their $110M venture round to working on interesting eLearning and tools for companies like Lexus, HP, IBM, etc. Of course, you'll get a better sense of this as you read through various post.
