#DevLearn Email courses
Challenge to Learn
OCTOBER 26, 2018
This session was about a simple but rather cool idea sending out a spaced course via email. I think it is a cool idea if you do not have an LMS or do not want to use it.

Writing down my thoughts, experiences, and ideas in WordPress in the form of a blog is still one of my best ways to learn. I have to say that, initially, I was not a big fan, but it has grown on me significantly. We use Zoom for internal meetings, webinars and learning sessions with customers.

At easygenerator we use these ideas to give direction to product development and our market approach. Over the past year I joined these ideas, tried to develop them further and I renamed it to ‘outcome learning’. Although I developed these ideas to give direction to easygenerator I believe that they apply in a broader context.

I came up with the idea to write 22 blog post (one on each principle) in an attempt to answer these questions. Therefore I call on you to send me your ideas/links/input on every one of these principles. I noticed that quit a few of them have two major questions: How do I implement these principles? I will moderate them into 22 posts.

We do have some ideas but we know we can’t figure this out without our partners and the users of our authoring tool. Any user can click on it and can come up with a suggestion or an idea. All ideas will go direct to our product owner who is responsible for the product development. And we will.

I use my blog to try out ideas. With the responses I can improve my idea or decide to drop the idea. There is less room for loose ideas and opinions in comparison to this personal blog. When I started out I just wrote about my learning experiences in my work and at conferences. But that has now shifted.

When we started building Easygenerator back in 2013, we had a vision about our product, but we also had a clear idea about what kind of company we wanted to become. We knew that it is the people that make your company; they define the heart and soul of the company. Now, eight years later, we are the company I hoped to become.

The key idea of the book is that small agile companies working together can create innovative solutions in a pace big corporations only can dream of. You can use standards like SCORM to make sure that your new ideas will be working in that environment, but I want more.

The idea is that we help people in this way to create better courses. Everybody knows (or should know) that learning development starts with defining clear learning objectives. In the new web edition o f easygenerator you can’t create any content or questions without creating a learning objective first.

The idea is that they are best capable to decide where they are of the biggest value for the company (and for the customers). For me books like this are interesting because the ideas are so far out of the box that it stretches your own boundaries. Roles are fluid and can change when the requirements of the work change.

I love this idea it gives a whole new perspective on learning content using well-known paradigms from geographical maps. The only thing I don’t like about this idea is that I haven’t thought of it myself. This idea really got me exited, we will explore this further, but I can envision what this can do for e-Learning.

Read this interview with Michael Allen, it is a great way to get to know him and his ideas better and to get inspired by him. I have an idea, a vision of the direction in which our product and company should grow. I have my product manager, who leads the product development as I supply him with new ideas. Guarding the company’s direction is another main task. We are only at the very early stages of that master plan.

I order to make it more complete I now added principles from Agile (Scrum) software development and my ideas about a new learning metaphor. In the earlier version I combined didactic principles with a management theory. I presented on this subject at the DevLearn conference in Las Vegas last November.

A user story can be initiated by an idea or a problem (bug). Based on the estimation we also will have a good idea what we can do for the next version and what not. Of course they need to be connected to the goals (as I described in an earlier post). A user story describes a change or new functionality from the perspective of a user.

The idea is that you replace instruction by a video or an e-learning course. Originally the flipped classroom idea was done very simple. I have high expectations; I have received a ‘product tree’ from them with tons of ideas. Getting the priorities right is not easy, especially if you have my mind, I can come up with a thousand ideas. So I decided that it would be a good idea to restore that balance. A great way to spread your ideas. The other thing is that the market will decide if these ideas (and our product) do add value for them, I can’t imagine a better way to get feed back on a vision. I read back some posts and he is right.

Recently I have reviewed a lot of e-Learning courses to get ideas for our further product development of easygenerator. The idea behind ‘corporate storytelling’ is simple. I also told stories to my kids before they went to sleep, I had some characters like boef-mega-boef (translated that would be crook-mega-crook) and my kids where always the hero that saved the day. Even companies that like the idea of User Generated learning are uncertain about this; will my organization embrace this idea? This will not work for us: Objections! But the bottom-line is that this idea is independent of a tool, it is how you organize your development process. Create learning maps, where the learner can navigate through on his journey to reaching his learning objective. Create better support for case based and scenario based eLearning in the authoring environment.
