The Importance of Informal Learning
MAY 26, 2015
When it comes to learning, most of today’s technology and methodology is centered around formal programs. In fact, every single one of the consulting projects I participated in was for formal learning. But as many of us know, not all learning is formal. Often there is more learning done in an informal manner. The trouble with informal learning is that it can be difficult to measure – if at all. Beware who's selling informal learning
Clive on Learning
NOVEMBER 23, 2011
There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that historically we have underplayed the importance of informal learning, whether that's experiential, on-demand or social. I'm equally convinced that, with the proliferation of great social networking tools and the ever-increasing confidence that learners are displaying when it comes to managing their own learning, informal learning should rightfully play a central role in our future learning architectures. So be cautious of oldies like me if, in their enthusiasm, they over-sell the idea of informal learning.

Learning through observation is the very first type of learning we experience as children. Young kids learn how to solve puzzles or beat the next level in a video game by watching their siblings or friends. Why you should start measuring informal learning today
DECEMBER 8, 2015
That most organizations simply don’t have a mechanism in place for measuring the ROI of informal and social learning in the workplace is more than just a matter of being “behind the times.”. It’s that some teams are missing a critical opportunity to harness all the invaluable knowledge hidden just below the surface — and just out of reach of many learning strategies. But when it comes to executing a learning strategy, many companies are still looking at their learning strategies upside-down. Overall, organizations aren’t so great at measuring learning.
