MOOCs, unlike typical on-line courses hosted on corporate LMS''s operate on very different principles. Because of its blended nature - formal course content with informal and social learning woven around it - MOOCs cannot be a top down endeavour. I will just call out a few to set the context.

In working with our customers, we discovered that they were trying to address a number of learning requirements, most notably formal learning, informal learning and performance support. One of the implications of the shift is that instructional designers can no longer think about designing only formal training programs that will go on the LMS. J ane Hart''s Workplace Learning Continuum illustrates the learning spectrum very effectively. They have to think of the entire spectrum and see it holistically.
