The first is about big data, the phenomenon that now makes available enormous, staggering, volumes of information almost instantaneously. The second is a condition that says information already known to us can limit how big data can be used because there are other types of knowing to expand thinking. So the era of big data is here.

How could such a straightforward process for transferring information and learning become bogged down in dense MBA rhetoric taking what is essentially a simple idea and obfuscating it in layers of process and jargon? Some might think large enterprises require significant resources to carry forward a KM initiative. I’m not one of them.

Except – the immediate manager modifies the assignment/methodology/direction, and/or the support promised – everything from equipment to people resources is neither available nor provided. And never reviews the work product again. The consultant somehow muddles through or cannot possibly deliver neither fast nor good enough. Cordial, yes.

Nevertheless, if it sparks ideas there’s plenty of information out there to put a fine point on things. The company’s sunk costs fade and expenditures for routine changes in every area from business cards to training costs demand less time, energy, resources, and money. This is in no way comprehensive nor highly nuanced.

When you try to get clarity, the requestor says that’s the only information I have — Hey, thanks. We know in learning building the back-story – that is the actual objectives, resources, assignments, deadlines, critical path, and such are ridiculously compressed. This is followed by a set of specs that led Columbus astray.

Eventually and slowly the novice begins to take calls, enters information into the CRM. The supervisor has now been called in – and begins informally, to recheck the mentees work history and further instigates a schedule to listen in on a random sampling of phone calls made to customers by the mentee. The mentee is confused.

When you desire higher order learning; that is information that actually teaches beyond mere recall, then how you design and what software you select for development define your expectations most clearly. There’s no learning there, only screens of information; a low-level target for sure. I refer you to the Grizzard quote.
