I do a lot of presentations where one of the topics is how to use LinkedIn more effectively as part of your knowledge work. And I consider knowing how to effectively use LinkedIn to be a core Work Literacy. In most cases, I will ask for a show of hands: How many of you have a LinkedIn Account? Generally 50-70%. How many of you actively use LinkedIn? Generally down to 10%. What this has come to make me realize is that for the vast majority of knowledge workers (including myself), there should be no separation between my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my Personal Knowledge Management system, and my day-to-day set of tools that enhance my knowledge worker productivity.

But, I actually think we should be focused on the emphasis on the type of knowledge work and the type of workers. The person in the call center does quite a bit of routine knowledge work. The processes have been formalized, in knowledge work, many of the processes are formalized. We like to think knowledge workers spend all day "problem-solving" but in reality they spend all day finding out what procedure should be followed in what situation. I’m curious about this segment, as the majority of applications that are shown for wearables are typically busy professionals who need a watch because they can’t even take the time to look at their phone, but here’s a lot of different types of work out there, and yet the emphasis is often on the knowledge worker. There are things about manufacturing work that sets it apart from knowledge work. Physically demanding work. Involves repetitive work. Mostly, business as usual at work and crisis situations at home took my time and attention. Because I love what I do (and I am hugely fortunate in that sense), it’s very easy to let my work consume me and my time. Much has been written about priorities and work life balance — especially for women. To be connected to colleagues and co-workers, be in office as much as possible. To strike a work-life balance, work from home as much as possible (most of the time). This taught me a few things about work, technology and myself. You name it. Immensely!

Using SharePoint before, during and after courses This typically takes the form of sharing best practices, code examples, templates, links; posting announcements; having discussions; showing calendar items; supporting student profiles; supporting student project work; sharing notes, documents; providing course content. The reality is that what we did on the Work Literacy course or what I did for my Collaborative Learning Course could easily be supported by the various types of web parts within SharePoint. I've been having fabulous conversations about using SharePoint.

One of the favorite quotes I used to use during presentations was Drucker - The most important contribution of management in the 21st century will be to increase knowledge-worker productivity. This is a big reason that I started Work Literacy. I firmly believe that all management and workplace learning professionals need to be constantly looking at how we can improve the performance of knowledge workers. However, when we look at concept workers, workplace productivity seems to be a fairly limiting phrase. It seems to be equated with activity.

I've recently been talking to people about evaluating performance of Concept Workers. Evaluating concept worker performance is an interesting challenge: No right answer - Most often there is no single right answer. Evaluator knowledge limit - In most cases, the person doing the performance evaluation knows less about the subject that the performer. Is my answer reasonable?

What works in my marriage won't necessarily work in -- and may even damage -- yours. The comments are also interesting but focus primarily on the word "best" vs. "leading" or "better" … overall the suggestion was to be very careful about assuming because something works in one situation it will work in others. This really rings true to me.

These technologies are supposedly designed for learning but that is not true. These technologies are institution-centric and vertical by nature.

really was all about new work skills - skills we should be learning. Actually, it's also about the fact that there's not really new work as much as there is new work skills. Work Skills Changing Most of us who used to use these things know somewhat know that they really aren't in use anymore. In presentations, I often will cite this as an example of the kinds of changes in work skills that have occurred and are constantly occurring. A big part of education is learning how to do research and really that's where you learn the foundations of knowledge work.

In New Work and New Work Skills , I discuss the fact that most of us have not participated in formal learning since college on foundational knowledge work skills - especially metacognitive skills. A lot of people who are concept workers use Google every day and have no idea that the ~ operator even exists. But, the fact that concept workers claim in surveys to be above average in their search skills but they don't incorporate these operators tells me that there's a gap. Our work skills cannot sit still. Sure they can get along without it.

One of the questions being raised this week in the free, online course Work Literacy: Web 2.0 To me, this is a critical part of The New Skills for knowledge workers. And what I often cite as the biggest change in knowledge work skills over the past 20 years is the change in access to people. In these cases, a new kind of conversation, distributed work is required. As a side note, the Work Literacy browse search feature worked great for me today. for Learning Professionals is how social networks impact personal learning.
