Oh, here is my latest directory of LMSs. #10 – Meridian - Despite a web site that should be kicked into outer space (hello, update?), the system itself has a lot to offer. I see it as a platform that could easily be for 1,500 and up users, although it may sit better at 5,000+. For retail shops I like the unique feature tied to OJT (on the job training). Learning 24/7.

Well, for one thing, the folks in the room were L&D, Training and HR people who are working behind the scenes. . It might come off as an indicator that they need a new system, however, I’d argue that the reason you see the hands is because whoever made the final decision, selected the wrong system. Dated graphics and really just a yucky system. If you still have the SAP system, I’m sorry to hear that. Cornerstone Learn – The LMS for CoD has improved, but is it something I would buy? Game based learning mobile style.

Back again to bring this first in a series of rankings for the top ten learning management systems for 2013. Still listed as a social learning management system, they have made some new strides that really work for me. Support of the iPad, thus mobile learning. Charging to remove their name of the system. As a former training director I had enough problems with users buzzing me about whatever, but having the name of the vendor too would not be good. The system is still very strong and they have updated their UI. No spin.

The ones who may not are those who identify themselves as “Training mgt systems and alike” – because they are really focused on the course authoring tool and are not a LMS in the true sense of the word. Rather than focus on the most common features, focus on the 10% that are different and thus may not be in every system – because guess what? Mobile learning – it might surprise you to know that 75-80% of all systems in the space, currently do not offer any type of mobile learning, the number goes up even higher for online/offline synch.

The same thing applies to the learning management system market. The “I’ll just look at a couple of systems, and decide from there” method doesn’t work either. Selecting a system takes a lot of time, a lot of commitment on your part (and group, if applicable) and yes, even cost – the amount of time x productivity x your salary wage/time spent to find a system. As such, people tend to go about it in a few ways to solve this dilemma. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs.
