This week another little bomb dropped in the corporate training market: Skillsoft , the industry giant in packaged e-learning and training content, acquired Mindleaders , one of the company's major competitors. Skillsoft's goal is to continue to build deeper and wider content offerings so they can be a big "one-stop-shopping" solution for the corporate learning manager.

Captivate 6 vs. Articulate Storyline

Discomfort with Adobe’s mobile strategy for Captivate Feedback that Captivate is tricky to learn and not terribly intuitive. SkillPort Publication Articulate Storyline SCORM 2004 publish to SkillPort SCORM 2004 - received error. publish to SkillPort SCORM 1.2 VERY fast load time to SkillPort. I am a Captivate shop. Have been since Macromedia existed (Captivate 2?) I've used Captivate through UI changes, a couple squirelly updates and the long wait for right-click functionality. So I go at this tool evaluation more than a little biased. Exact same steps.

Five classifications of Learning Management Systems (LMS)

Connect Thinking

There are lots and lots of Learning Management Systems (LMS) on the market. These LMS are meant to provide a straight-forward end-user experience of managing learning and performance. These are often feature-rich for learning and are generally proactive in offering solutions for mobile learning and performance support. SkillSoft SkillPort ). What is your learning philosophy, and how does your LMS support this philosophy? The more aligned the LMS is to your learning philosophy and strategy (e.g. LMS that are part of a suite of HR Systems (e.g.

Status Report on the Learning Ecosystem

In the Middle of the Curve

I’m in the throes of a major learning ecosystem redevelopment project. This includes any content purchased (SkillPort, miscellaneous outside tutorials) and content developed in-house. Much of my radio silence has been the result of time spent “collecting bricks” – the materials I need for rebuilding this thing. Some of the bricks have been material – changing development tools, developing an inventory of toys applications that I can leverage (thank you IT colleagues!). It’s still early days. We have essentially divided the ecosystem into three parts Portal and access.

Skillsoft buying SumTotal – My Take

eLearning 24-7

The document provides other information, including “Why Skillsoft intends to purchase SumTotal”   Among the statements as to why, is “Comprehensive HR suite, including learning, talent and workforce management” HR and Learning – Internal. Yet for some reason, Skillsoft sees HR and Learning interconnected, which to me, makes virtually no sense. The same can be said from a learning perspective. I am always bothered when vendors see the entities as one in the same.  Let’s say you are L&D, and provide learning to customers. .

#skillsoft Perspectives 2013 - Higher Ed Track

In the Middle of the Curve

See what other institutions using SkillPort are doing. - 2 of the 3 higher ed presentations I saw used either another LMS or a portal to access and curate SkillPort content. The 3rd that went to SkillPort directly had a very targeted audience (IT folks). - The big theme at ALL of these sessions was curation and curriculum. Our Organizational Development and Effectiveness group does their curation through a website and deep linking SkillPort content to point to specific content around themes. SkillPort seems to be used in 2.5 People got too overwhelmed.

TOGAF - Defining where the Learning Ecosystem fits in

In the Middle of the Curve

Our learning ecosystem is meant to mesh in with this greater Enterprise layer as much as possible. Segment Architecture (we are here) - for the purpose of the Learning Ecosystem, we are dividing this segment based on function. "Is it used for executing ''learning'' stuff?" It''s the "Program Management" layer - with "Learning Technologies" as the program. Capability Layer - for the purpose of the Learning Ecosystem, this is the individual piece. For instance, SkillPort LMS would be a Capability layer. Here is the general picture of the framework.

A New Strategy for Reporting

In the Middle of the Curve

During this entire process, we've learned that trying to administer reporting groups in SkillPort is awkward. They abandoned their groups within SkillPort and are working to incorporate the information from SkillPort into another LMS. From the above information, and from looking at our requirements, we may be better off exporting the information available SkillPort into a DataMart and allowing the managers to report from there. The challenges: - Getting the SkillPort information into our DataMart. project (drink!)is is going to take YEARS.

#perspectives14 Big Data

In the Middle of the Curve

Kinda creepy actually) - Each module and element in SkillPort - a piece of data. What is the payoff? - Key to successful learning program + Engagement, alignment, adoption, value - These are driven top-down Big data opens complementary path. Away from program centric to user centric (How do we empower people to learn?) (So the first step, for me, is to define the measurable behaviors. What evidence will I have that we are moving towards a Learning Organization) SkillSoft - Improving user engagement. Yikes) - People try to contact multiple ways now and not wait.

One of the largest training content company (Skillsoft) just finalized the acquisition of one of the largest and most pioneering learning platform companies (SumTotal Systems). Notes from an LMS upgrade

In the Middle of the Curve

The SkillPort upgrade that occurred on October 15th was successful. Lessons learned - This is the second time the search function in our SkillSoft installation was missing some features (instructor-led training, custom content, learning programs) after upgrade. Especially since SkillPort upgrades require downtime during normal business hours. Feedback on SkillPort 7.0 so far - Overwhelmingly positive. General feedback - it is easier to find things, especially in the Search and Learn section. The code for LDAP worked without a hitch. Fingers crossed

Working around the LMS

In the Middle of the Curve

I was at a local learning/technology conference yesterday and one of my peers (who I'll keep anonymous) did a great presentation on some short, just-in-time videos/screencasts that her department had done. The other advantage of the external learning objects is that it doesn't force me to go through the amazingly cumbersome and ugly 5 step conversion. Do you need reporting?

Update on Life and Stuff and Things

In the Middle of the Curve

There will be a write-up of the SkillPort LMS project in the near future. learned some things about house-buying. 1) There are a LOT of people who want their fingers in your money 2) The process is amazingly complicated 3) It takes just one crazy person (in our case, the listing agent for the house we are buying) to make the process even less pleasant than buying a car or getting teeth pulled. I had the Captivate 5 post hanging out for the past month. Partially to really put the product through its paces. Partially because I just haven't had time to write much. Good times.
