Creating lectures, rearranging them and uploading the content is a dream. When I couldn’t figure out how to delete a lecture, for example, I found the solution via someone else who had raised a similar problem. Udemy assumes that the bulk of your course will be lectures. Udemy is incredibly easy to use.

The black hole of adult education

The diagrams themselves were outdated — showing only the original configuration of the Mir and not the myriad modifications made over the eleven-year lifespan of the station — but so were the lectures. Furthermore I had the impression that my understanding the material presented was almost irrelevant to the lecturer.

Let’s get rid of the instructors!

We live in an era where “training”, “lecture”, “course” and even “teaching” have become dirty words. To many L&D folks, these types of courses (there’s that word again) are mere replicas of the lectures and exams that they so despise. Ergo, xMOOCs are bad.

Each hall hosted stalls, exhibitions and lectures, and every square metre was crawling with people. Although most of the delegates speak English, the lectures, take-aways and simple things like signage are not bilingual. It reminded me of the showbag pavilion at the Royal Easter Show on Children’s Day. Maybe next year!

There’s no point rehashing the same lectures when the world’s best authorities have already recorded them and offered them to the world as OERs.

The lectures I attended and the exams I crammed for faded into a distant memory, until the emergence of learning analytics rekindled the fire. It’s a way of thinking that is founded on statistics, and I maintain it should inform the activities we undertake in other sectors of society such as Learning & Development.
