Historically the ELN events were held in a lecture theatre with the day following a fairly standard pattern of 5 or 6 presentations, some Q&A and occasionally a panel discussion. Sadly this is not that much different from most other conferences that I’ve been to over the years. what are you most looking forward to today?

How was your conference? How was the backchannel?

So rather than passively being lectured at, participants can be sharing their notes of key points, posing questions and pointing out useful URLs. The backchannel is not that new as a concept – most virtual classrooms have included one for years – it’s just that Twitter has made it easy and free to have one.
