And, we’ve known for decades (long before the ubiquity of digital media) that long lectures to passive learners are ineffective, for reasons that have nothing to do with deterioration of focus. Despite this, we see usefulness in the basic method of microlearning, without assuming the worst about learners' attention spans.

Second, it's no secret in the education world that long lectures and training programs don't work effectively. Additionally--if you'll forgive the anecdotal evidence--I've seen little evidence for a difference in attention spans between the youngest and the mid-career to retired students in university classrooms.
