I just read George Siemens post Will online lectures destroy universities? He makes the point that despite articles like Why free online lectures will destroy universities – unless they get their act together fast : Statements like “universities are obsolete” or “universities are dying” are comical. And untrue.

This is a topic that I've been wondering about for a while and Donald Clark hits on it in his post : Professor Lewin - "It sounds arrogant, I know, but it's better to see a first class lecture on video than a mediocre one in the flesh." The same can apply to most standard teaching and training lectures. How does branding work anymore?

I had seen these physics lectures before, but I was reminded via Stephen Downes and the NY Times article about professor Lewin's lectures and was telling someone about them just the other day. You can find his lectures on: ocw.mit.edu , including electrostatics , mechanics , vibrations and waves.

I've talked before about a world in which the Best Lecture is available to us anywhere. If we are going to force students to sit through lectures, shouldn't they be the absolute best lecture? Tell me how you are going to compete with Physics Lectures by Professor Lewin? Of course, should it even be a lecture?

If it's a class with 700 studens and pure lecutre, and you have a taped lectured and notes on the web, why bother going to the live class? Especially if you can play back the lecture in a fast-forward mode (one of the coolest features out there). It does raise some very interesting questions!

Some details of what they want / need: The portal we need to develop should be able to handle online registration, producing letters of offer, payment gateway, producing letters of acceptance, producing student cards, downloading syllabi, downloading study guides, processing purchasing orders that trigger the distribution of the textbooks by the Publishers’ (..)
